At my new workplace the male and female loos are right next to each other. On my floor, the women's is on the left, the guy's on the right. On the floor below, where I was for a meeting yesterday, it is swapped around. I was in a rush, had to go before a meeting started and just charged in and got quite the shock when I saw a urinal. I've not reversed out of a place so fast in my life! Hilariously I literally bumped into one of my managers coming in. I was quite embarrassed, babbled something about the loos being swapped on this floor. He was more worried he might have hit me with the door. Too funny.

How splendid that you've reached a point in your transition (and at a workplace!) where you can just laugh about something like this. Good for you, Grace!

I am working in the same place I have been for years.   I have several times found myself heading automatically into the wrong room just by habit.  It only happens when I am distracted and thinking about things other than what I am doing right now (bad habit.)   Fortunately it is a quiet time of year and no one has noticed my abrupt about face yet.  Heres hoping that by our busy time I have worked myself beyond this.

Happens to me when I visit places I used to visit a lot as a guy. There's a conference I go to every year, that takes place in a Hilton hotel near me. I'm only there once a year so I haven't gotten yet into the habit of going to the ladies. A couple times this year, I almost ducked into the men's.

It could have happened to any of us Grace. I know I have caught myself a couple of times before making that mistake. It's wonderful that you have reach the point to see the hilarity in it. Hugs

Haha, I'm super paranoid about accidentally going into the men's room so I am always on edge and paying extra close attention. Hasn't happened to me even once since I got my legal ID crap changed.

Ours are like that too. Six floors have them one way and the seventh has them reversed. I'm sure you weren't the only one that did that.

I did that once and I was bounced out.

"Ma'am, this is the MEN's room... The ladies is over there."

Now I always consciously look for the proper restroom. At work, often I am going with someone anyway, so I figure out which is the correct one.

If it's one thing I retained from my "guy brain" is my sense of direction. :)

I did that by accident at work. I had been using the mens for years. I was just used to it for so long that when I wasn't paying attention I just went to the wrong place. I immediately felt awkward and got out before anyone noticed me.

A while ago I visited a place that I had not gone to since I transitioned and walked into the wrong bathroom, between the smell and the sight of urinals I was out of there faster than you can say "ooops", luckily nobody saw.

It's funny how something like where to go for the bathroom is so habitual that we walk there totally on autopilot :)

Today I went to a unisex bathroom in a hotel. Worst ever. Not only did it have a urinal, it also did not lock except for the stall. So some guy came in and did his thing while I was sitting in the stall.

Gross.

I don't know why people want unisex bathrooms. I can't stand them. But today it was any port in a storm basically.

I thought unisex toilets were usually just single stall set ups. Apparently not!

I was eating a a restaurant yesterday and went to the unisex restroom afterward to wash my hands. It had a urinal and a toilet in a stall.

I'm with Kate on the unisex bathroom deal - I don't like them and I don't want to be using one alongside a guy taking a dump in the next stall.

The problem is how do you define who is a guy, who is a girl, some people don't identify with either binary and they have to have somewhere to go and they don't deserve to be singled out and made to use special toilets any more than people who identify with the binary.

Gahd, I have dreams about this. It's replaced the naked-in-school dreams I had as a kid.

Edit: Come to think of it, it's replaced the going-back-to-high-school dreams, which had replaced the naked-in-school dreams.

Ha!  It's even happened to me once.  There is a bar/restaurant downstairs from my wife's office that I've been to a hundred times before concerts and sporting events, and a trip to the men's room used to be a regular occurrence.  The first time I went there in girl mode, I had a few beers, had to pee and by force of habit walked toward the men's room, opened the door, and ooops!  Then I realized that I had no freaking clue where the ladies' room even was.
