Title: Legally me!

This morning I had my name/gender change hearing, and it went incredibly smoothly. The judge was a very nice woman, warm and respectful -- she asked me and my witnesses just the required questions, gendered me correctly, and never even asked to see the letter from my doctor confirming my diagnosis, medical treatment, etc. (She probably saw no need to -- it's fairly obvious at this point that I've had irreversible changes from it. I'm feeling very happy, and a little stunned -- it hasn't really sunk in yet, and I can't believe it was that easy.

Jill, the party's going to go on for a while! Glad you could make it, and thanks!
Mosaic dude, the judge was very cool. She was very warm and compassionate with everyone, especially with the little kids who were having their names changed for various reasons -- mostly absent and/or abusive fathers, although there was one Somali man who was having his, his wife's, and their six kids' names changed because everyone in his building was also named Ali and their mail kept going astray. She found that to be a perfectly good reason, but she made sure to ask each of the kids, even the littlest who was maybe three, if this was OK with them. When my turn came, as I walked up to the podium I could almost hear her saying to herself, "Well, jeez, of course he can't go on being [absurd female name], and if I had that last name I'd change it, too!"

Yes, I do, don't I? (https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fthefiringline.com%2Fforums%2Fimages%2Fsmilies%2Ftongue.gif&hash=635dd8fbd198d13e75e7b21e12e5f405e686d654)
Thanks again, all. I wish I could share this smoothness with so many people here. I feel incredibly fortunate that my transition has been comparatively easy. (At least so far... <knocks on every piece of wood within reach>)

It's cool your judge was so friendly, and congrats altogether! I know what a relief it can be, getting everything under the right name and gender. Something about knowing my documents could back any identity claims I made, no matter the skeptic, seemed to help with social anxiety for whatever reason. But again, congratulations!

Congratulations!
I had no idea how important this was to how I felt until I had it done. I didn't even mind my female name, really. But, now since I have my male name, I smile every time (ok, not every time), I see it in print! ;D

It does feel great. It'll be at least a month before I have new ID in hand -- the court mails the order, then I'll have to go get certified copies, then I can go to the RMV and apply for a new license... which they'll then mail to me... (https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fthefiringline.com%2Fforums%2Fimages%2Fsmilies%2Frolleyes.gif&hash=0a0b44ad1de7ecfd5b4be1ab5919f433c770be5f)
And in the meantime, I'm celebrating by going on a short canoe trip, so it'll probably be the 15th before I can even start on the license. But that's all OK. It feels good just knowing that I only have to put up with the old name for a few more weeks (and then only if I have to produce ID).
I've always hated my given name, but my last name has always been a pain in the ass -- it's an unusual one, and almost no one can pronounce it correctly, much less get the spelling right even when I spell it for them, especially over the phone. Now I won't have all that hassle. (https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fthefiringline.com%2Fforums%2Fimages%2Fsmilies%2Fbiggrin.gif&hash=fa2db8a2d15c338f95b7a2cbcb46a673a808a937)
Thinking about it, I realized that what made the judge so special was that she wasn't interested at all in the power of her position, only in how she could best help people. The world would be a better place, if only...
