So I realized that I want to transition soon, but I have a problem. I doubt I can use my parents insurance for hrt without them finding out, so either I do hrt without insurance or wait till next year when I might be able to get my own plan through school.

I just wanted to know how much it would cost to do hrt without insurance; like getting the prescriptionS, the blood works, and any check ups.

Figure about $100 per month for prescriptions
$300+ for doctor visits.
$500+ for labs.

My doctor visits are about 130$ every 3 months, 230$ if I do blood work.  Scripts can run anywhere from 150$ a month depending on what you get.  I do it all out of pocket, live on my own and I make minimum wage.  Uhg life sucks, but its progress :)

I go to a LGBT primary car and they have a Walgreens Pharmacy and they use a special program for the patients. It is a 401 or something to that effect. Last month I purchased:

3 month supply of spiro,
3 months supply of progesterone,
1 month supply of delestrogen,
1 month supply finasteride,
needles and syringes for 4 months,
for $130.00.

My insurance pays for my doctor visits. My copay is $30 per visit. I'm on one of those plans where you have to hit a certain dollar value before they start paying for your medication. A 3+ month supply of testosterone and 24 syringes (with another 24 needles to draw with) costs me $75. Lab work costs about $35 per visit.

For the first year of HRT:

4 x quarterly doctor appointments = $120
4 x quarterly lab work = $140
4 x 3 month supply of testosterone & needles = $300
Total = $560 out of pocket

My doctor will cancel my prescription if I don't get quarterly blood tests for the entire first year of HRT. After the first year, this will cut down to once per year. So ~$300 for hormones, plus $65 for a doctor visit and annual bloodwork.

Look around and see if there is a place near you that works on a sliding scale. Also check with your school. I learned after the fact that I could've started HRT if I had asked. You could also check at your doctor's office about where any correspondence would be sent to. Despite being on my mom's insurance when I started HRT, all the bills were mailed to my personal address. So there's a good chance you could use your parents' insurance and not have them know if you don't live with them.

I have insurance but I'm "too young" to have my medication covered. The Spiro, E, and Finasteride cost about $11 dollars a month for each. My doctors visits are covered completely, but they would cost about $125 dollars every six months or so. I guess the initial is more expensive because of the blood work that needs to be done, but that's just a one time thing.

I've heard Wal-Mart and Costco have good prices.

Wow!! Y'all pay a lot. I don't have insurance and pay everything out of pocket, but I pay around $40 per month for all three of my pills (E, P, and T-blocker), $60 every three months or so for my doctor's visit, and about $100 for bloodwork. I've found good deals, discounts, and cheap places though. Always shop around and do research! Never settle for the first option.

Oh yeah, if you haven't already, download the GoodRx app for your phone. Any time you have to go out of pocket on something, open it up and do a search for your prescription. It should give you prices for all the pharmacies in your area, and they often have coupon codes that you can use.

Hasn't helped me with testosterone yet because my doctor's office pharmacy is so cheap, but it saved me about $50 on surgery meds. Highly recommend it.

I get my scrips filled at walmart.

$10 for 90 pills. $4 for 30 pills of E.

Spiro, 60 pills is $5 with insurance or $30ish without.

Most insurance plans will cover spiro as a blood pressure medication.

Doctor visits don't cost much. The labs are what drive up the price. However work it out with your doctor and see if they do your primary care and hormones in one visit. It has a better chance of being covered by insurance.

If you don't have a job, seek out a local LGBT clinic if you can. They may bill sliding scale for low income people.

I would also suggest lgbt clinic. There is a chance to get the blood work and doctor appointments for free
