Hi everyone,
My question to you all is, what are your interests? Why am i asking? Well im very insecure when it comes to mine. Im a very geeky girl, i love Teknology and Sci-fy. I built my own 3D-printer i have read about a hundred novels from the expanded Star Wars universe (Love Star wars) i have seen nearly all episodes of Star Trek (All seasons). I alsow love to play online game like "Wow" and "SWTOR" or other mmo's. When i play whit my friends online i never get miss genderd partly becaus i play female characters but mostly becaus the way i act in the game, according to my friends there. But my fear is that the general public will see my interests as nothing but the interests of a boy. It is worth noting that my feald of study is applyed physics which meens that nearly my entire life is spent doing what most would say is only for men. :(
So my real and final question is should i dropp some of my Interests and replais them whit somethings generaly thought of as girly?? Bear in mind im not talking about my studys thay will stay as is no mater what im only talking about replaising som of my free time interests.
Thank you all so much, and i hope you will all have a wonderfull Day/evening/night where ever you are. :)

to me it seems totally irrelevant what your interests are , you like what you like. My interest are mathematics and just about everything I encounter in life, although I like cooking a lot.

If I may offer my humble opinion, if you have interest in something, just keep doing it.
The girly element in it is you.
The girly element in it is you.

Yes, for me it was a case of "Same monkeys, different barrel."
I still love playing metal on my guitars. If you look at my avatar, I had 5 of those 6 guitars before I came out.

Yeah, screw gender stereotypes! Do what you want. That's what I do.
It means that I'm a butch nerd girl, but I'm enjoying it.
If someone ever questions if something I do is "girly" enough, I simply say to them that I'm a girl and I'm doing it, so clearly it is.

In my case, my interests are mixed. I used to have hobbies that I now have nothing to do with. This is due to the fact that my interest was to "fit" into my gender role assigned at birth. In never really enjoyed them. Then I have others that are still with me. I like strong narrative video games, and playing the piano.

What's the point to living if you aren't able to do things that you enjoy and that give you pleasure?
Offhand, I'll guestimate that a good 75% of what I do and love, as well keeping me gainfully employed is what many would call "male". I also know plenty of females with the same interests. I mostly doubt that they consider themselves trans

It saddens me when people stop doing things they love after transition. I love star wars with a passion, as much as I love clothes, my wardrobe is full of starwars toys. I really enjoyed playing mmo's, they helped me transition. So cool you built a 3d printer.
I like cars, guitars, gaming, clothes and being a geek. I really want to get a motorbike this year or next too.
I did learn to sew after I started transitioning though, that was something I always wanted to do.

with no HRT yet to make a comparison, my hobbies range from remote-controlled car racing to baking. I've also taken an interest over the last few years in growing flowers...and somehow I've managed to collect three laptops, two desktop computers and two different kinds of Kindle LOL...computer geek perhaps?

well sandra you intrests seem very similar to my own, in addition to that I work at a game store not electronic games, board games, rpg's, minature war games, we had a magic origins pre release last weekend. I run a dungeons and dragons encouners group every wednesday introducing people to the game, and about a month ago went full time showed up as myself continued right where we left off...ok I may have dropped a subtle hint that mis gendering me or negitive comments may result in dead characters but that's ok :-P
I am far from the only female gamer at the store and they come in all shapes and sizes and so far all of them have been very supportive of me. One of them is a 10 year old girl who regularly crushes grown men at magic the gathering, I nearly giggle every time some 30 year old guy rage quits because a small girl in a pink tee shirt beat him at a game. :-)
so no your hobbies and intrests are yours alone, I doubt many women could be found who don't have at least a few "male" hobbies or intrests just like few men lack any "Female" hobbies or intrests.

I still shoot firearms...AR15 mainly, but others too. Interest in black powder is slowly gaining momentum, too. (1858 Remington, also looking at a 32 cal Rem pocket pistol).
I just discovered DCS games, it looks kinda hi-tech, you almost have to be a pilot to fly it, but....hmmm....I've always liked flight sims...Did you know some people make full-size cockpit mockups?!?
I used to like FPS, but the blood and gore and carnage is a turn-off now.
Cooking, occasionally.
Sewing, occasionally.
I would say I'm 80% the same as before, with some new interests.

I was right in to flight sims for awhile, just have a flight stick and trackir 5 and had some of acusim planes on FSX, I do have DCS though though I havn't played it much, so hard to remember all the keybinds between sims. Some of the home cockpit builds are amazing

I repair my own bicycles, I can weld, use a lathe and I'm slowly working on building a cyclecar in my garage. I've always built up my own computers from parts and I play the Elder Scrolls series of games with custom characters I've created myself. Sometimes when the mood is on me I build large scale railway models from scratch.
The biggest mistake I ever made when I transitioned was thinking that my old interests were no more and selling off all my tools. I've slowly been able to build up my range of tools again, but it would have been nice if I hadn't sold them in the first place. If you enjoy doing something keep on doing it and don't let anybody tell you that girls don't do xxxxxxxx.

Thank you all for taking the time to answer, i realy appreciat it.
To be honest i was afraid that you would say that you all sacrificed your "male" interest to meet the norm. Sins you all show such overwhelming support of me i'll try to be more confident as a woman instead of conforming to societies gender norms.
Thank you all again :)

My hobbies didn't really change at all. I still like sports and water sports such as water skiing and I still enjoy playing the guitar and piano. The most important part is I'm still an avid gamer for the mmorpg and moba genres and enjoy all sorts of geeky/nerdy sci-fi shows.

If something interests you stick with it! I'm still pre HRT but like playing video games and watching sci-fi movies. And can't see those going anytime soon. But I have started to fall in love with cooking, reading and cross stitching. Have given up other hobbies playing guitar, metal music, horror movies and action figure collecting. None of it holds my interest anymore.

I think the best way I can explain things is that I am a huge gamer geek who happens to be a girl who happens to be transgender.
Given almost all my friends are also gamer geeks reassuring them about that has made the transition easier on them I feel.

I used to be a fantasy gamer geek and still have my armies consisting of hundreds of miniature figures. Modding, painting and making custom miniature figures from scratch were the big draw cards, but I liked to play as well. I don't play anymore because it's impossible to find any opponents to play against living as I do out in the rural countryside.

Pretty much all of my interests are gender neutral, e.g. geek culture (especially Doctor Who and anime), cosplay, playing the sax, scuba diving. Most of these were considered to be only masculine a few decades ago, but now they're enjoyed by everyone ^_^

Your interests does not define your gender. I was using my stereotypically male interests as an excuse and to convince myself that I really don't need to transition. At the same time I looked for examples of girls who are interested in typically male things to be able to justify my feelings. In the end I found that worrying about stuff like that is quite silly.
Most of what is considered 'normal' in a society is just made up stuff that has no connection to reality at all and most of these change all the time.
For example programming was not a male dominated field at all when it all started, the on-board flight software for the Apollo space program which made the Moon landing possible was made by a woman.
As I mentioned my hobbies and interests are mostly in male dominated fields but I don't really care about that anymore. I know a lot of cis girls who are interested in the same things so I'm not even out of line and what if I were? Who is to say that girls cannot be interested in cars, computers or any other things they like?

Way too much!
programming/geekstuff, chemistry, pharmacology, biology, ethnobotany/mycology (working in the garden/tending plants, hunting mushrooms), dressing up, drawing/arts/modelling/mapmaking, MUSIC in all it's forms, partying, history
Games, playing and possibly making them one day.
Learning, hopefully teaching someday too.
Languages
Observing & listening
Eastern culture
Cooking & food in general
Fishing
My interests tend to vary a lot haha but I doubt any will change
OP, YOU ARE WAY COOL, SCI FI IS DA BEST !
Physics transgresses the mind and body.

I've only been on HRT for about a month but so far my interests are still pretty much the same. I did enjoy gaming once in a while and loved reading different genres but I've noticed that my interest in gaming started to wane a little. Of course my biggest love has to be MMA as I've been training and competed in the amateur level for a few years. But because I'm transitioning, I stopped about 6 months ago just to avoid injuries to my face, muscle growth, and because of my strength loss. I think even after transitioning, my love for the sport is so ingrained that I'll probably continue, just not be as active.
As for hobbies considered feminine, I enjoy shopping and texting, lol.
I personally don't think your hobbies define your gender, it's just that people have different interests depending on who they are.

I play music, which I think is fairly gender neutral. I like cycling, but it's more for excercise/transport than a hobby.
I enjoy computer games from time to time, but only if I can play a female character. They haven't got the same draw now that I realise I might actually get to live as that gender.

Your interests really shouldn't change much to be honest. What's the point of being a girl if you can't do the things you love.
As for my hobbies, I draw and draw and draw haha
I surprisingly play a lot of video games mainly ranging from rpgs to fighters (and like pretty a lot of people League of Legends). HATE FPS which is what a lot of my friends love. :(( I love creativity so I tend to pick up very small hobbies like playing music, singing, writing poetry..
I have always love emotional movies, so called "chick" flicks, mystery & suspense, and love dialogue movies. I love japanese dramas that make you cry.. SO I love crying ahha After transitioning the only thing that sort of change was how long I can play games until I am bored..
Well I always wanted to one day wear beautiful clothing.. So thats a new hobby of mine
I am majoring in multimedia design which was kind of lame.. Wish I did something more geeky or sciency.
I don't have many "male" activities... which to me is more like heavy cleaning, building stuff, body building, etc.. Since they require lots of muscle training, being dirty which I kinda flop at XD Not saying they are male activities. Since women can love muscles themselves and be really strong, but yeah yours aren't really what I would say "male" stuff. Even if they were than that's all you and if you love it then that's all that matter honestly.

I play the guitar as well, I play a couple of hours everyday gives me an emotional release. Started playing over 40 years ago, someday I may actually get the hang of it :)

the look on the clerks faces when a 40 year old woman goes into a guitar store and busts out master of puppets, I'm struggling to play mine since srs just because of pain and my gibson is heavy, hopefully soon.

Left specifics for later...
Let me seeee. I compose music /classical stuff/ and I like photography. Of rather manly-ish things, I am a fan of Symphony X band. Also other progressive metal bands. Being a software developer by trade is also stereotypically so.

Why cant your hobbies stay the same.. I am still interested in the things I loved as a guy.. I am also a little on the geeky side..computers, star trek etc.. love it..
but I am also gained new interests as I grew.. I become a girly girl and become interested in makeup, shoes and clothes. I love just as much trolling the mall looking for a cute outfit or a pair of shoes, often they are connected or just getting my nails done.. as watching some star trek or messing around on my pc.

I found found playing xbox when my nails are drying is a fantastic choice, the controller keeps your fingers mostly apart and its easy to loose track of time playing a game and tada, dry.

I'm a model railway enthusiast and I love my trains a lot. In the future, I'd like to build a big layout and trains to a real-life timetable. I'm collecting rolling stock at the moment and while house-hunting, I've got an affinity for places with big spaces.
I'd like to take up the keyboard again and maybe pick up the violin or bass guitar too.
When I get my own place (still hasn't happened!) I think makeup will become more of a hobby too.

I grew up surrounded by relatives who'd worked on the railways so it sort of rubbed off on me. I still like to build railway models from time to time when the mood is on me :)

Do the things that make you happy. For me my primary one is my dogs (siberian huskies), dog sledding, also I still like guns and fast cars. I love my acoustic guitars as well, I had 5 of them but now I am down to 4. I donate time to help disabled american vets every month by going to a local veterans hall and helping to prepare dinners for the wounded soldiers. I wasn't a veteran it's just something good that I like doing and it's only one night a month so it's not bad. I have also turned out to be a minecraft junkie, it's like crack to me. I can kill an afternoon and never know what happened. My interests are all over the lot just like me, but I am a happy person.

the look on the clerks faces when a 40 year old woman goes into a guitar store and busts out master of puppets
That's always fun! One time I was admiring a guy's handmade guitar that he was playing at a bar. He noticed that I was paying attention to him and we got talking shop after he was done for the night. He handed me the guitar, I started slowly and then proceeded to shred like crazy over an E/Am pattern. Next thing I know, everyone is staring at me with their mouths wide open like they'd never seen a middle aged woman play anything other than kum-bay-ya before.
Another time I went to Guitar Center for strings, and the clerk assumed that I knew nothing. (I know everything!)
"And what kind of guitar do you play, miss? You know those strings are for electric guitars."
"I mostly have Strats." *eyeroll*
"Really? How many do you have?"
"Lost count. Probably 12 or so."
"Are you in a band?"
"No, but I've been in lots of them over the years."
"What kind of stuff?"
"Hard rock, metal..."
"What kind of amp do you have?"
"Mostly Marshalls. I have a Vox and a Hiwatt as well."
"I'll just shut up now."

I am really glad to see that most people are okay with still liking the same thing regardless of where they wind up in the gender spectrum.
Having gone through (and still getting it) emotional abuse for a number of years, it was hard for me to "justify" the things I really like to myself. Because they weren't "right".
But now I am working on not doing that to myself. It is a way of caging my soul.
That being said, I love to read, write (journals and poetry), creating things with doodles and art things. Coloring is a wonderful stress reliever. I like to read and collect comic books. I like movies and video games. But I also like painting my nails and talking about cute boys with my friends.
So I guess what I am saying is that things we like to do and enjoy are the things that don't define who we are. They merely make up our selves. And that is pretty awesome.

In no particular order:
Star Wars - I absolutely *love* Star Wars! Imagining myself as a female in the Star Wars universe was one of the things that helped me cope with being transgender as a child. When people walk into my apartment, the first thing they usually say is "I see you like Star Wars..." :D
Computer Programming - Coding and reversing are some of my favorite things to do. I also happen to have a degree in it.
Music - Both playing and listening. In addition to playing the drums, I play the saxophone, guitar, and bass.
Hockey - Both playing and watching. I used to coach and ref as well.
Games - I play video games, mmo's, board games, and miniatures. I don't really care for killing people in games anymore so I'll play healers in mmo's and I don't play many violent games unless there's a decent story to go along with it. I'm weird though, so there's a bunch of exceptions. :D
Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Superheroes - Movies, television shows and books. Love them!
Rom-Coms - Now I can be open about liking them! :)
Comedies - Who doesn't like to laugh ;)
Makeup/Hair/Fashion - I can be open about liking these too. Yay!!!
Cooking - I love to cook, but not when I *have* to cook.
Running/Yoga - The things I do to keep in shape. Total love/hate relationship with these. Even though I complain sometimes when I have to wake up at 5AM to go running or do a yoga routine, I get kind of grumpy when I can't do them.
Philosophy and Religion - I enjoy having deep discussions about these.
Things I'd like to be into:
Anime - I'm actually saving this one until I date someone who is into it and would like to teach me about it. I look forward to having that bonding experience.
Cosplay - I just need to lose a little bit more weight and I hope to be able to pull off a Sabine Wren cosplay.
Drawing/Painting - I used to do this a lot when I was younger. I have mental images of artwork I would like to have on my walls, but I haven't been able to find what I am looking for online. I'm seriously contemplating just painting them myself.
Things I used to really be into but not much anymore (but can still talk about):
Wrenching/Tuning/Racing - I used to build and race cars. I'm not into this anymore, but I kept about half my tools just in case. I sold off all the heavy stuff like engine hoists, compressors, 6' high jack stands, etc... It does come in handy when I bring my car into a mechanic and they try to rip me off for being a woman though!
Car Audio - I used to love designing and installing systems, but I find I just don't care about doing it anymore. It is possible that the hearing loss from playing in bands for so many years has made this hobby somewhat pointless for me. :)
Archery - I read The Lord of the Rings trilogy when I was in third grade. I immediately decided it would be really cool to be an elf so I bugged my parents until they bought me a bow. I did archery for years, but I have so many hobbies that I haven't had time for it in a long while.
I'm glad that lot of stuff that was traditionally thought of as masculine has become pretty popular among females as well. I find that I always have things to talk about with people at social gatherings and on dates, and rarely get any misogynistic stereotyping for my interests and hobbies.

Sandra, I love sci-fi and fantasy. Always have and don't see that stopping. I go to ren fairs, comic con's, play video games, play D&D, love all things space oriented and work in software.
But, I also like flowers, scented candles, pretty shoes, tropical drinks, lying on the beach and lots of girly things.
I'm a geek girl. Sounds like you are one too.

Drummergirl, I own a nice vintage recurve bow, but I'm not very good at archery. I'd like to take it up more seriously though and get better at it. Making my own bow would be something I would like to do too.
Before I became ill I taught myself how to remount oriental sword blades into new handles and hilt furnishings. I was reasonably good at it and remounted several swords for people before I had to give it up. I still have all my jigs and tools as well as some sword blades & etc.
I was studying the sword arts as well and I still have my sharp bladed katana (shinken). A true warrior doesn't sell their sword and my daughter knows I'm going to pass it on to her when I die.

Making my own bow's and arrows was one of the best thing i know as a kid, runing around in the forest playing pretend game's (I was always the elf :) ). I know that thay where nothing near what you could do but it was nice making them and to incorporate the crafing of them in to the game :)
So cool that your sword will bee pased down to your doughter, it actualy gave me goosebumps. :)
Good luck whit that bow :)
