Title: Fat bias and Gender Dysphoria
Post by: Scrawlix on July 28, 2015, 04:07:10 AM
Does anyone have any links to information about how to navigate the world of transgender while being fat? I'm a fat activist and I don't have the interest in entertaining diet or weight loss talk. I just want to learn how to go about transitioning and being prepared to deal with fat biased doctors. How do I go about convincing someone that I hate my body not because I'm fat but because my breasts disgust me so much that I can't stand looking at them or at myself in the mirror.

Which way do you need to go? MTF or FTM? I know you mentioned breasts but many overweight men have breasts so I cannot tell.

I ask because the MTF route has increased risk of thrombosis and being overweight will not help. I also know that if any surgery is required, UK surgeons will not accept people over a BMI of 30 because the excess weight interferes with the surgery and the healing process.

If you are going FTM then others will have to answer as that is not my route.

I'm FTN.

I've had a breast reduction before (and then, begged the doctor to take it all but he refused). I've also had a hysterectomy.

You don't need to convince anyone of anything. You're experience of your body should be considered valid by everyone you meet. If a mental health professional questions does not believe you and gives you a hard time that he/she would not give a client who weighed differently, than that is weight discrimination. Don't put up with it. Don't give your money to people who invalidate your experience, whatever the reason.

I'm MtF, but I'm in the same boat.  I want to lose weight for the health benefits, but I don't want to feel like I need to be thin to transition.

There is a surgical concern and that is extra fat can result in a less desirable outcome. If you were to have surgery at your current weigh and latter reduce for personal reasons or illness, the surgery may no longer appear correct. This is something to consider if you are going to have surgery carrying additional weigh. Any good surgeon will point this out before surgery and they may not wish to do a surgery because of it.
