Title: Transgender book suggestions?
Post by: phoenix633 on July 29, 2015, 02:02:58 PM
Can anyone suggest good books on transgender stories and issues?

I really liked "Whipping Girl" by Julia Serrano.

What are you looking for, more specifically? I second _Whipping Girl_ for an in-depth discussion of trans issues, but if you want trans fiction, you should check out Topside Press and Transgress Press (they publish authors like Casey Plett, Kelly Dunham, Imogen Binnie, and Sybil Lamb). Susan Jane Bigelow does sci-fi stories and novels with trans themes; Libba Bray's _Beauty Queens_ and Courtney Milan's latest contemporary romance have a trans character. Jenny Finney Boylan has a couple of trans memoirs out.  Janet Mock has an autobiography.

Being Emily, Almost Perfect, Luna, and Just Girls are YA novels by cis authors that have trans main characters and handle it well.

Well things that would be informative for my family. Maybe books with many stories in them and things that include trans male experiences.

Oh! If you're looking for stuff for your *family,* I strongly recommend "Love, Always" by Transgress Press, which is full of stories from SOs and family members (and has a predominance of stories about trans masculine people).

I really liked Janet Mock's Redefining Realness, there's also Julia Serrano, and a lovely book called Luna (I think, I'll check my Amazon reading list to be sure).
I've mostly been looking at blogs and clogs recently though. Publishers usually only want one type of trans-story for books. Which gets tired and overdone.
I didn't see anyone say Transister Radio, but there was a really good reading of it done for public radio which can be found at Audible.com.

"Warrior Princess" by Kristin Beck. Despite the fact that most of it is ghostwritten, it's a good perspective of how far we go to live a lie.

If you're looking for trans male YA fiction, try Parrotfish and I am J.  I haven't read them, though.

Oh, and _We Are Shadows_ is terrific YA trans male fiction. Can't believe I forgot that one! I loved it.

What about good educational resources for parents? I'm also looking for that. Online stuff would be okay but my mom seems to prefer books.

I think you'll like these;  I found them on Amazon Kindle while I was waiting for my doctor to come in the waiting room (you know doctors- I had some time to browse)

Transgender Complete,: A Virtual Handbook Kindle Edition

The Transgender Guidebook: Keys to a Successful Transition Kindle Edition

Trans Bodies, Trans Selves: A Resource for the Transgender Community Kindle Edition

I recently finished reading "Her Name is James by CJ Heath" and thought it was excellent.
I thought that the author managed to work in many different perspectives via different characters.
The narrative was engrossing and the issues poiniont.
But that's just my opinion :p
Happy reading hon,
Bobbie

"The Collection" is a book of short stories by transgendered authors about transgender themes. I've only read about 1/3 of it, but so far several of them have been really good.

I highly recommend The Other Me by Suzanne Van Rooyen. It's one of the few FTM novels out there that I can find.  It's really well written and fit me, although I spent a few more decades in denial than the protagonist did.

I'll agree that  "We Are Shadows" and "Parrotfish"  are both good reads.

The Complicated Geography Of Alice is a book about a MTF youth and her family, not really pertinent to you, but I'll take the opportunity to bump my underground library thread!  ;D

This is a very emotional, triggery read.

Oh! And really the only memoir I'd recommend for *family* just starting out - Bumbling Into Body Hair by Everett Maroon. Unlike many trans memoirs, it's funny as heck; not a lot of tragedy or sadness, not too scary for people new to the idea, and well-written and charming to boot.
