Title: Found My Name
Post by: Took on August 20, 2015, 02:57:02 PM
I've been wondering about what to call myself ever since I realised I was trans. The name Alex (short for Alexandra) came into mind quite early; I've always liked the name Alex for girls, and it seemed to fit. I haven't been sure though, so I've been thinking of different names. Zoe? (maybe) Tegan? (too outside the normal realm of names?) Victoria? (would get shortened to Vicky, which I wouldn't like)

Well, today at work we were discussing something and my manager said '...you'll need to show Chris this.' As if to correct her, I automatically mouthed 'Alex' without even realising it. I guess I have a name now :). It feels good, especially as it's another step on the way to getting comfortable with all of this. Now hopefully it won't be forever before I can start using it; I've never liked the name Chris, and it will feel good to get rid of it and become myself :D.

Congrats!

I've noticed a lot of girls seem to use a female variation of their male names, often citing simplicity. I'm not a fan of this for me personally. Still trying to find my name these days. There are names I like, but some end up being not a good idea.

Know what I mean? But grats, Alex!

Congratulations, such a nice way to figure out which name suits you  :)
I went through the entire list of legal female names (which isn't that long here actually). I love so many exotic names, but there is an advice about not going too exotic and make your name the reason why people second guess your gender.
So that ruled out names like Megara. Rose was the most 'exotic' name I could resort to as I'm living in Denmark and I identified with it. It also felt quite 'me'. I think you just know when the name is right.

That's great.............it means a lot to identify a name with who you really are.
Congratulations Alex. It really is a lovely name.

It's awesome to hear you have a name you like! And, since it is a name boys and girls can both use, you could say you prefer that over your assigned at birth name for whatever reason, ya know? Congrats on the name either way!

Thanks everyone. I've been saying 'my name is Alex' to myself over and over to get used to the idea, and it feels good. Feels exciting :).

Yeah, I know what you mean. I can see how it would work for some people, but I feel like I need more of a clean break from who I am now and continuing to be called the same wouldn't provide that. Hope you figure out your name soon :).

Congratulations! Alexandra/Alex is a lovely name, if I may say so myself, and it certainly seems like it suits you. :)
