"Hunter Keith doesn't take his parents' love and support for granted.

When the 16-year-old from Farmington Hills, Michigan, came out as transgender to his parents in 2013, they were nothing but accepting.

"I just wanted to understand," Roz Keith, Hunter's mom, told TODAY.com. "It was never a question of acceptance and he knew that, which is probably the reason he felt so comfortable telling us."

Articles like this really bother me. The mother starts paying attention when the trans kid says "I want to be a boy" and she realizes that it isn't that he "wants to be a boy".

This is pernicious. It spreads the dangerous misconception that we all feel like a member of the opposite sex, when there are thousands of us that experience being transgender as a longing rather than a certainty.

Makes me wonder how many trans kids say "I want to be a boy" and their parents assume they're not trans because of misinformation in articles like this.
