Title: How trans friendly is the Hampton Roads area of Virginia?
Post by: AnamethatstartswithE on September 08, 2015, 01:18:14 PM
I'm looking at a job there, and I was wondering how friendly the area would be. I've heard stuff about Richmond being good, but that's a pretty long commute. I would guess that Norfolk or VA beach would be better than N'News or Hampton, am I right?

I couldn't imagine Virginia being too transphobic. In fact when it comes to the attitudes of the general public its probably at it just above average for the U.S and quite a bit more then average amongst other southern states in terms of openness if LGBT. Remember they elected a man who supported us and our cause as his (whos party was in power during the election)opponent was very anti-lgbt. This is from observation

Thank you Chloe, that makes me hopeful.

Also Thank you Laura, I had seen their webpage before, though they seem to be weighted towards the L's G's and B's

Richmond is good. Northern VA is good.

I don't have experience in the area you're looking, but I have a lot of very progressive friends who are from the Virginia Beach/Hampton area, and they've all been incredibly supportive of my transition.

As a state, VA has been excellent in terms of getting all of my documentation changed over.

Thank you Laura and Max, you've given me a lot to look at. I only accepted my transness a couple of weeks ago and I'm still trying to figure out where exactly I am on the spectrum. I was filling out the job application and they had the EEOC page where they had 3 gender options, "male", "female" and "choose not to answer." I felt that after the past couple of weeks I'd earned a "Choose not to answer."
