Title: How much money do you need in the bank for HRT?
Post by: Lululooloo26 on September 19, 2015, 10:02:12 PM
I live in new jersey i wanted to know how much you need in the bank for 1 year of HRT, i am a trans woman and my name is Lulu and i have been gathering information on many things from estrogen to trying to find the ones doctors would most likely prescribe trans women.  I am seekng a therapist who is very understanding and found a trans doctor who has a practice with 300 trans patients and before i go i wanted to know about how much money i should have saved up.

I am a student working partime looking for another job and life has been a whirl, i am on medicare/medicaid.

I also wanted to know how much anyone else has paid for the first time, i.e blood work, psyche evaluation 2 hrs of info.  They are charging 495.

I don't know what my labwork cost, but each of my psyche evals have been about $150. I'm paying cash for HRT and that's only $20/month. So I'd say your $495 figure is about right if you're talking a year of HRT and one each of labwork and psyche eval. I'm near Philly, so the prices are probably comparable in our areas.

Each doctor visit costs your co-pay, HRT pills are about $20/month usually. The first year you'll need to do 3-5 blood tests. One before once after 3months then usually 6 unless you increase your dose and it'll be another 3. Each set of blood tests should be at least partially covered by your insurance, but mine are about $300. And therapy is usually around $150 per 45 minutes unless they let you pay on a sliding scale. School therapists should accept sliding scale payments.
My ballpark estimate is around $2000 for year #1, depending on how much your insurance covers therapy and blood tests it could totally be lower. So if you save ~$166 per month... And successive years cost less because you don't need as many doctor visits, and therapy won't be required forever though it's recommended.

Check your insurance. My HRT is done with my primary care so insurance covers it for $15 copay and $15 lab copay.

I go about once every 2-3 months.

Spiro and P are covered by insurance at $5 each so that's $10 a month copay. Walmart has the E cash price $10 so that's $10. Total $20 a month for my HRT meds.

With insurance, my HRT meds are a few bucks each month.  Endo and lab visits (every six months, although every three for the first year) were covered by insurance - the endo was kind enough to "pretend" than I was seeing him for something non-trans, and the insurance company didn't complain once even though it technically excludes trans-related care.

So with insurance, four visits, labs, plus meds would likely total around $500 for the entire year.

Without insurance, it would be a different story.  The meds would still be cheap because they're all available as $9 generics, but the visits to the doctor and particularly the lab tests would have pushed this cost up to many thousands of dollars.  I'd gladly have paid out of pocket for everything though, because the effects the medication have on my well-being are priceless.

I had to buy extra insurance to help cover endo costs and none of my insurance will cover the HRT.  So, with all that it's costing me about $2400 for the first year.

Insurance has covered all my doctor visit I just pay $20 copay for my hrt my insurance only will pay for a 2 week supply of hormones a month. Kind of bs. So I don't use my insurance for it but my pharmacy has a rx savings plan do it ends up being $20 a month. So around $400 first year  not including therapy or laser/electrolytes.
