Hello ladies,
I've been lurking for some time now and have gained an incredible amount of helpful information from everyone. Im in the early stages currently, I began Hrt 3 months ago. Planning FFS with Cardenas in March. So I was curious does anyone feel comfortable sharing the story of how they choose a name? Ive been trying to let that happen organically but i'm stumped!

My mom actually picked mine out for me at my birth. All of my siblings have a "male" name and a "female" name, with middle names included, so my current name is in a way still a birth name.
On a side note, do you feel that March is perhaps too soon for FFS? I do not judge you if you do not, however in just under 10 months hormones have completely reshaped my face shape, jaw, nose, and brow bones.

Welcome to Susan's Place. I wasn't all that unhappy with my male name but it was - well - male. One day I saw my name on a auto license plate and I loved it because it recycled all the letter in my male name making it feminine. There was a feminine version of my middle name but I didn't really like the sound of it so I browed my middle name from a girl I worked with on my first job. As for the family name, I didn't have problems with that and kept it.
Should you decide on a different name and if that name isn't used, contact a Global moderator and we can change your screen name to your new name. Often when a name is used, people make their name into a sentence or attach a special name to make it unique.

It took me a while to find my name (Bay) but I loved it when I saw it. I loved it because it seemed gentle and it was linked to nature; a quiet curve of land where the sea comes in. My old name started with B also and I thought it was nice to honour that in some way, or maybe I thought it would make things easier for everyone who new my old name. Anyway it was really annoying when a few people's response to my new name was 'I'm just going to call you B'. I felt they weren't really trying and it was a way for them to hold onto my old name. No one calls me B though, it's just a response I got from a couple of people who were resistant to change. I chose Bay also because it was a name I felt that was quite free from gender so whilst changing over my paperwork if people thought I was a boy called Bay or a girl called Bay it didn't really matter.
But part of me wishes I had let my parents choose. They have been so loving and supportive and I knew it was really hard for them to give up the name they had given me because it meant so much more to them than what it meant to me. I didn't think of that at the time though but I think it's a lovely thing to do if you have a good relationship with them. xxx

Hi Bristol and welcome to Susan's. My actual name is Genevieve.I have always liked the name. There's something regal about it in my opinion. When I accept my trans identity, I had my name already.

Hi Bristol, welcome to Susan's Place! I named myself Tracey, my best friend didn't like that one and named me Devlyn instead. Sometimes they come along like that, but one of the best parts of being transgender is our ability to choose our own name. You'll find one. :)

Welcome.
I picked my first name from a TV show. The character Olivia on Fringe just spoke to me. Her struggles with her identity and the plot of her alternate self just connected with me. So I was like I am Olivia.
My middle name is my older deceased sisters name.

Mine was pretty easy. My boy name is Terence, and I go by Terry, so I went out on a limb and call myself Terri. :)
Ironically, I hated my name as a child. I remember being teased, "Ter-ry the fai-ry!". I wasn't particularly effeminate or anything, it just rhymed.

My mother named me. I was originally supposed to be a girl so she had a name picked out and ready to go. When I decided to transition I asked her what my name would have been if I were born a girl... to which she replied Amanda Danielle :) I loved it instantly!!! What's more, my mom loves that she got the privilege to name me.

Hi Bristol,
A big Aussie welcome to Susan's family. It's good of you to drop in and say "Hi". Hope you like it here, and you stay for a while.
There is a mountain of information, resources and friendship waiting for you here, you just need to jump in start talking and ask any question you like. You're quite safe here and we are very accepting.
I never did like the name my mother chose, Tracy. I'm just not a Tracy personality. So I went though a names list to find what resonated. In time I tried a few, Sarah, Elizabeth even Catherine with a K. Finally chose Catherine after my mothers aunt. She was the matriarch of the Casey clan. A women you didn't stand up to, or else. Fits quite nicely with my real personality.
Looking forward to hearing more of your story in time to come, but in the meantime, be safe, well and happy.
Lotsa huggs
Catherine

Hi Bristol,
I came up with my name because I go by Black cat on a lot of games. So people called me Cat for short on them. I got used to it and the name just kinda stuck. I choose Catherine so that people can still use Cat as the short name for me and also Catherine just kinda stuck out.

If I had been born female, my mother would have called me Jane. I don't think I could use it as a first name, but possibly a second or third name, if I can work out what I want as the other(s).
I am too used to my legal name and it might be a struggle to be called something else (or a variation of it).

I chose mine (Kate) just because I liked it. The full name is Katharine Diane, although I have experimented with the order spelling (I originally wanted to keep my current initials, and started with Diane Catharine, and I may flip-flop again before I make it official).

personally it took me awhile to find a permanent set of names, one day well browsing the internet i heard the Jemma and i really liked it and i stuck with it, For my last name i was like hmm i want something creative and different so i used the name Sirens, all though I'm still kinda working on a middle name which I've mostly been getting opinions from other people for because I'm bad at middle names, at the moment my name sits as Jemma Jean Sirens although the middle name is still kinda up for debate whether or not i can find anything better. PS if you have any better middle name suggestions toss em my way ;)

Mine was sort of chosen for me and my middle name was to honour a nice person who helped me choose some clothes. I took the last name from the kick butt woman in Indiana Jones, Ravenwood as it matched my last initial.
I had applied for a fuel credit card from a company and their computer spat out Clare instead of my former name. I stayed with it as the company didn't care about the name, just the name on the cheque!
I chose Rachelle because I was looking for some clothes and the salesgirl said if I was honest with her, I'd be a lot happier with my choices because I said they were for my sister. If it was for my sister, a gift card would have been more appropriate. She helped me out with some nice things, managed to find a private place to try them on. So, I chose her name to thank her.
Love,
Clare

Thank you so much for your replies! I had heard that many parents choose a male and female name before they know the sex. Unfortunately Im an orphan and I asked my grandparents but Its hard to be casual about a question like that (They are some Arizona Republicans so im scared to come out yet)
And yes I do think March may be a bit too soon for FFS. Alot of feedback Ive been getting is encouraging me to wait a bit longer. I just wanted to have my type 3 and nose because I know hormones wont have too much effect on them.
I think what makes it extra challenging is its hard to weed out the opinions of the people who know me. It just seems like such an important undertaking!

That was the easiest part for me! When I was 3 or 4 a new girl moved into the neighbourhood and I thought her name (which isn't Jane LOL!) was the prettiest name I ever heard so I adopted it for myself and it has been with me ever since, over 60 years now. Everything else came hard but the name was easy ;)

Actually, mine's fairly simple, and it's entirely due to a lucky coincidence.
My parents named me James, but they and the rest of my family have always called me Jamie as a sort of diminutive form of it. I've generally introduced myself as Jamie to everyone since.
And since Jamie is one of those few names that can be used by either gender, I don't have to change it.
My middle name is Alan, which is going to require a change. I'm planning to go with Alice just to keep things simple.
Also, since I'm in a scientific field (paleontology) that involves publishing papers, I've been wondering how to explain a potential name change, but I think the classic solution of using "J.A. (last name)" for everything will work.

Talking to my wife about this today and I asked her what she like and she reeled off a heap of really horrible names...then out popped Elizabeth, which she really likes, I really like, it fits my age, was the name my mother would have given me had she known I was a girl, the name of my best friend who is most probably responsible for saving my life over 30 years ago and to cap it all off, it just kind of went "clunk" in my head when we both said it...and the most important reason of course... if you are going to have a name it may as well be the same as Royalty ha ha

When I was a child, I used to refer to myself as Emily in my head. I do not remember where Emily came from to be honest...but Emily was a part of me for many years. Now, at 43, Emily has acquired something of a negative connotation...I made the mistake of telling my mother my girl name and it has become a derogatory term for her. Now, I am Alyssa. This name comes directly from the TV show Charmed, which I watched religiously because it starred 3 beautiful women, any of which I would have traded places with at the drop of a hat. I named my daughter Piper and I stole Alyssa from Alyssa Milano.

My first name came via a gasoline company calling me Clare. Didn't bother me, kind of liked the name and since way back we originated in Ireland, I thought Clare, after the county was a nice touch.
My middle name, Rachelle, I called myself after the really nice sales clerk who took good care of me in my early, heart stopping shopping trips for clothes. I told her they were for my sister but she asked if they were really for her, a gift card would be best, if they were for me and she apologized if they weren't, then she could really help me much better. They were and she did so I adopted her name. She was quite honoured about that.
My last name I borrowed from the lady in Indiana Jones film, Raiders of the lost Ark. She didn't take any crap from people and neither do I.
Love,
Clare

Interesting reading everyone experiences with this. My story is almost too simple. the second I thought I needed a female name Sarah popped into my head. I have always liked girls names that start with an S... Then I thought maybe I should have a middle name too and Elizabeth popped into my head. With that Sarah Elizabeth :icon_censored: <---last name was born. I tried to give it some thought to make sure they were the right choices but I never doubted it and I love them.
I would love to hear about your experience with Dr Cardenas. I'm pretty muche decided to go there when I'm ready to get things done but I love hearing about people experiences. If you could post a note on this thread so I can find it that would be great ;D

I came out to work recently and they all call me Niko while I still look feminine.

Not entirely sure how she'd feel about that, but I would like to hope she would understand.

Wanted to keep same initials so looked up a list of girls names that start with T. I liked Tonya best. Middle name Jonelle, from the male Jon.

I originally wanted to use the female name my Mom was going to give me. I married a girl with that name, so that wouldn't work. Instead I chose the female version of my male name, Danielle. My male middle is my grandmother's maiden name. To still honor that I am going to use her first name.

As time has been moving on, I have been feeling that I need a name that is more feminine, so that I can be correctly addressed, when it is her day. As she's intricately mixed in my everyday, I wanted my name to be at least related to my given name and am settling on Rowan (which bizarrely enough, is).
The only way I can describe how I feel with this name for an intrinsic part of me is comfortable, and content. It seems right, somehow. Settling, even though this name will be rarely used.

My eldest sister's name begins with an A, and then my other sister is B and me being the youngest had a name that started with a C. I knew my new name would also have to start with a C (also because my dad has a tattoo of ABC in babayin to resemble us), so my mom chose Connor because it was the name of my great grandfather.

My new name is Alice. My deadname also started with an A, so I could keep my initials. I picked it because I felt like life was a surreal journey and I was Alice in wonderland. It might also be an homage to Velvet Eden's song "Street of Alice." but I don't tell people that because not a lot of people know who Velvet Eden are.

I wanted to keep my same initials. My middle name (Lauren) is just a feminine version of my former middle name. I knew I wanted to be Kathy, but it took me a while to decide if that was short for Katherine or Kathleen. Eventually, I decided on the Irish version, Kathleen.

Are there youngins from the 80s around. Maybe some of you remember the movie Willow...
From the min I heard the princesses name I knew that was my name. I changed it a little. Her name was Alora Danan, I'm going with Alora Denen, Denen will replace my current middle name.

I might use my current middle name as it is an accepted female name. I was always secretive about it when I was young for fear of teasing. However, I could actually like it as a female name.

My name was given to me by a woman I confided in about my likes, dislikes, desires and aspirations. She asked if I had a name, which I kind of did, but it was a female version of my male name that had been used through the years to put me down. She said that a name born out of negative connotations wasn't good. She insisted that it didn't fit me anyway. My confidant was Italian. Since I'm also from Europe (not Italy), she said, "Veronique," with that spelling. It's sometimes shortened to "Vero" though I prefer the full name.

I was named after my mothers father 'Robert', an insidious, abusive, criminal (professional con artist) But it was family tradition to name children after a mother or father of the parents.. I always hated the name, it always sounded to me rough, gross, obtuse. I'd intended to change it ever since childhood to 'Robin' officially, even before the onset of puberty and the real dysphoria kicked in. Neal, I'd always gone by instead, though I basically grew up being teased and called 'Nellie' or variations of these, jokes about me 'kneeling' down. *I refuse to kneel for anyone.*
I pretty much just jumbled up a bunch of letters, and came up with Angela. It contains all previous letters of my name, and is a delightful little irony since I'm the furthest thing from Angelic in any way shape or form! XP

I'm not entirely sure, I was going to change my name to Jessica because it is closest to my birth name, but one of my brothers had a child with a woman named Jess, and it would be too strange. I really liked that name though :(
Amber was just something I came up with, for no particular reason. I made the screen name zamber74 as I was not sure if there were any other people with the name Amber here. I think at some point it will be changed to something else.
