Title: How to find a surgeon?
Post by: Adrian G. on October 21, 2015, 11:17:24 PM
So I just got word that my insurance is gonna start covering trans surgeries in 2016. I want to get top surgery as soon as possible but I have no idea where to start. My insurance has a limited coverage range so it would have to be in the Western New York area (Buffalo/Niagara Falls, possibly Rochester). A google search didn't come up with much. How did you find a surgeon you trust/does anyone know of a doctor in my area??

I'm not aware of anyone specializing in top surgery in that region. Doesn't mean they don't exist, I just can't think of any. You could look into general plastic surgeons and see if any of them are open to performing it. That might be your best bet.

IMO - surgery is a big deal. I understand not wanting to spend a lot of money on it, and I understand that it should be covered. But ideally it is something you only get done once, and it leaves you with results you're happy with. Don't go to someone just because they're in your region.

If I was in your situation and could not find anyone that regularly performed the procedure you're looking to have done on trans patients, I'd find another surgeon with more experience and see if they're willing to work with your insurance. You could possibly get grounds for some kind of exemption if there are no surgeons in your network performing the procedure you want.
