So I've found that the moment when I accepted that what I had been feeling most of my life wasn't a kink, and wasn't just me being weird, but that I was transgender, was a very important moment in my life. Yet there doesn't seem to be an exact term for it. I'm partial to "awakening" though that might be a little too generic. "coming out to yourself" seems very descriptive, but it's a bit of a mouthful. Does anybody have any ideas?

I call this "discovery," the outcome of "questioning."

Self acceptance is major important for us.  Whether it is being self actualized or just plain feeling right it is a special event that some of us waited a long, long time for. 

I know some people who call it their "real birthday."

Love this....."I've recently had my trans-apocalypse". Beautiful!  ;D

That said, my experience of this enlightenment of self was more of a gradual process, closer to peeling an onion than getting hit by a bus.

Realisation, perhaps?

Though apocalypse seems like a pretty cool way to describe it.

Revelation is a good word for it, though epiphany is probably the best from a literal definition standpoint.

That's why I like this site - I thought I was alone (silly me) that I thought it was just a kink/fantasy and I realized it was more.  I like all the terms people have suggested but maybe trans-leap.  I know it's not as dramatic as apocalypse but fitting I think.

While I dealt with the issues of being trans from a very early age, there was no support or research vessel for me as a preteen/adolescent.  Just thought I was crazy and was very much ashamed of myself.

The moment I was informed that I was not alone and not crazy, but trans was life altering, an epiphany.  Everything that has followed has been enlightenment.

At first i thought this was kind of unnecessary but then i read 'transpocalypse' and i'm sold

i mean we talk about reclaiming words; this one seems like a pre-emptive strike for the inevitable gender revolution that some people seem to fear is coming, after which there will be No More Real Men and No More Real Women only vague confusion

Enlightenment - a light revealing. We see in the light the effect, but not the cause.  A Transgenders' entlightenment reveals both the cause and effect.

At the time, my trans-apocalypse felt like lightning and thunder, it was so profoundly illuminating and grounding at once ;D

I came to terms with myself in the mid eighties although I'd had the passion to be female since my earliest memories. Back then I called it the womps. It's a conjunction of woman and mumps. I called myself wompy. Yes there are many perfectly adequate English words but I thought I was the only one in the world at the time so it needed its own word.

Talk about a walk down memory lane. At least I can still remember such things when I'm tickled in just the right way.

yes! exactly
