Title: getting away with long hair
Post by: jonjon on September 23, 2007, 02:13:17 PM
Hoping someone here can advise me on how i can pull it off without getting mistaken for a girl.

Here's a pic of me with long hair last year.
(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi19.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb193%2Fheavensgaze%2Fme%2Fme231-1.jpg&hash=922cece254c23ff1fb0b4edea752edc859ff4c13)

The reason i really really want my long hair back is because without it i feel like i'm not able to express myself, i feel not myself, incomplete kinda if you like.

I'm getting tired of trying to find short cuts that i like, that reflect my personality and how i feel

I have had long hair since i was a teenager and unfortunately no ever accused me of being less masculine for it. but what is unfortunate for me may be fortunate for you. a few suggestions i can make is first you are either going to have to let the bangs grow out so they can blend with the rest of your hair or you are going to have to cut the rest of the front to match the length of the bangs. second is you can start training your hair to part close to the middle  and find a way to get it to lay much flatter on the top of your head or you can always let it lay strait down in front and pushed slightly out of your eyes. right in front of the ears take a small bit of your hair and cut it so it is even with the bottom of your ears so as to give an illusion of the starting of sideburns most men with long hair leave that there to either look more masculine or they just miss it when they shave. I hope some of these suggestions help I don't blame for wanting to keep your hair it looks very cool!!

the length it is now if trained as it grows you would look great with the long hair! I don't think the length of you hair is much of a gender marker anymore anyway I think it is more the way it is worn!

I get ya. I like my long hair. I feel vulnerable and feminized when I cut my hair short. I don't seem to pass better either way. If I shave my head to bald or fuzzy-short, I pass less and men think that I'm a man-hating lesbian and won't talk to me, and lesbians think the same thing and try to hook up with me. Not that I dislike lesbians, but I'm not interested in entering a woman-centric subculture, I can't relate to it.

Jessie's advice is good. No bangs, little sideburns. I dunno about the middle part. Mine passes best when slicked back straight from my brow (no part) and tied back at the nape of my neck. Guys tie their pony/pigtails back there, girls usually start them at the back of the head.

You wanna slick down any little fringy fuzzy fine hairs. They soften the edge of your face and have a feminizing effect. You may find, if you're like me, that if you slick back your hair hard, you have a 'male' hairline that is hidden by baby-fine hairs (at the coronal suture of your skull) that never grow long. If you shave 'em off or pull them out the effect is kinda profound.

I have seen alot of guys wear thier hair like this and it is very masculine and attractive. see there is more than one way to skin a cat! (I want to know who tested this saying and why cats are too cute to do that to  :( poor kitty)

This is all excellent advice! I'm seriously considering growing my hair out again, though maybe not to the length you had before. Closer to what I had in the past but now that I'm on T I hopefully won't look too girly. I really think you can pull it off- you have good facial features for it.

Here's what mine used to look like (and what I may do again):

This exact question is bothering me a lot lately and it would be nice to hear some unbiased opinions. Well, could I get away with long hair? (Excuse the crappy quality I havn't got a digital camera and did those with my mobile)

The shape of my head looks even weird when I tie it back to a strict pony tail. And I just love long hair on men and women equally.

I miss my bowl cut :p

Personally I wouldn't risk long hair on me until I have a better moustache and facial hair that says male and not female because of the long hair. But that's just me. Some can pull it off with a male enough face.

Incubi, you look great with long hair. You remind me of someone. I wish I could remember who...

Anyway, if I were you I wouldn't cut it.

At the moment I can't imagine cutting it anyway, but it doesn't look male at all, does it?

A few of the guys I worked with had very long hair, one down to his waist, and they wore it mainly slicked back or sometimes parted in the middle and tied low down at the back of their necks, which looked pretty good. Girls tend to tie it further up which doesn't look right on a guy.
The best thing is just to let it grow, and don't do any trimming at all. Keep the length the same all over, i.e. no bangs. Any styling or coloring tends to stand out and gives it a feminine look. Also constant conditioning and combing gives your hair that salon shine and groomed look that most long haired guys just don't have. Half the time they grow it because they cant be bothered to do anything with it, and tying it back just keeps it out of sight.
Avoid fancy hair ties as well, even if they are for guys...most just use a rubber band. Anything shiny just doesn't look right
The thing is, get it how you want it and just leave it to do its own thing. The more you play with it, the more it stands out.

Hope this helps :)

Actualy you can condition it... but dont wash it too often... that ruins the look LoL...

Basic hairties, the ones that dont have metal, tie it back at the bottom of the hairline at the back of your neck, no layers or coloring, or styling, or anything, when you get cuts, let them know, "Just a trim, get rid of the split ends, no more than X inches."....  just brush it back, tie it and forget about it...

And wishy... Dude, you look scarry ticked in that pic... totaly diffrent and no at all the cutie you are now...  Even guys look better when they smile  :)

I've never encountered a long-haired guy who goes to get it cut professionally, except for the guys who had 'feathered' glam-rocker hair back in the late 80's. (Here Doc attempts to entice the readership into swanning about in cheap PVC trousers and singing, "Smokin' in the Boy's Room" with him.) We don't want that. Everybody I know, including myself, trims the ends at home by twisting locks of hair around a finger and just cutting the hairs that magically stick their damaged ends up when you do this, or ignores them entirely. Half the point of long hair is not being bothered to go to barbers.

Most guys with long hair just use a coarse-toothed comb. Women with good long hair use nice boar-bristle brushes and brush a lot of strokes, which makes their hair all soft and shiny.

Thanks.  :D
It wouldn't work, though. I live far far far far far away in the middle of Europe... ::) (And in the middle of nowhere too  :'(...at least I'm 18 since today so I'll be allowed to enter our one gay bar.)

Yeah, right...it would have been way more intelligent to check where you come from BEFORE answering wouldn't it?  :embarrassed: ;D
I've even been to the UK once. (It's a sad truth that during that week I've seen the only two gay persons I've ever (knowingly) seen all my life. :-\)

But to come back to topic:
Most people advise avoiding dyed hair and not completely basic haircuts. In my suroundings, though, I see a lot of boys of my age (well, I'm 18) who sport exactly that kind of look.
I would say that at my age it's easier to get away with such things but you really don't see many adult or older men with (unnaturally) dyed hair colors.

As someone who had long hair when I was a teenager and lived as a male, I might be able to help. If you have any hair on your neck, dye it or find another way to make it stick out. One thing males don't seem to pay any attention to when they tie their long hair back is the hair on their neck....but everybody else will notice it.

Both you Wishy and Incubi are very attractive and both look very feminine......I'm not sure if you are both Female to Male or not but you both look female.

Men usually have more agressive feature's and usually look like they are scowling at lot of the time and you need to find a way to harden up your face. Also Wishy the female hairline gives it away. Transision is really hard for most of us and it's a very hard thing to do successfully.

Hair isn't an issue, some guys have long hair, some girls have long hair and cut a genetic females hair and she still looks female and guys with long hair still look like guys with long hair. The two genders are very different and male or female feature's are hard to eradicate which ever way you are going...
