The Truth About Transgender Suicide

"For this year's transgender awareness week I wanted to write about something that the transgender community and its allies are often afraid to discuss. Those who want to drive transgender people into the closet, legislate against us, and stigmatize us, talk about all the time in order further marginalize us. It is literally a matter of life and death."

A question I have asked is why is it important that transgender, gay, and lesbian people need to be turned straight? Conversion 'therapy' and electric shock treatment has done more harm to people who are normal. Yeah, we may not fit society's idea of 'normal' but I'm normal and happy as the next person.

Great Article. Too bad you can't implant education, understanding, comprehension and compassion in people's brains.

This doesn't cover everything, such as verbal and mental abuse from others... I recently had to sit through on the phone (thankfully on the phone and not in person), my "Dad's" "lecture" yet again of oh I'm confused, I'm this gender so on and so forth all the while having to hear him name off many reasons why I am this gender and further sinking to a new low he added how certain parts of me are shaped and I don't pass (I do pass but the shapes get to me...) and I became VERY suicidal at that point and told him so, the "man's" response ticked me off to say the least but what's really disturbing is, ever since then, (a few weeks back) I've at least once a week remembered his dehumanizing and unsupportive words and it's sent me each time into a bad place, so I've had to block it but it keeps coming back into my head... I hate being this way, wish I could forget it all and start over in the right body, wish family and friends would accept me...
In the mean time I will continue to block out as much as I can, hope on the unknown future and try not to focus on the bad stuff... But yea, this article is good, just missing some key pieces that it ought to have. Maybe I can use this article when talking to come someday... doubt they'll listen.
Oh, don't worry, I won't be listening to my "Dad" doing that again, I'll sooner hang up the phone and something will need to be done about whenever we rarely see each other in person.

@Laura: I don't want to derail the topic but no that wouldn't help, I read the first few paragraphs, I am not a child, I don't live with him (Thankfully) and his problem has to do with God and the Bible and also his Biased Church. He's also OCD about his beliefs and forces them onto others. I've argued (Both peacefully and at times not peacefully) with him on who I am, tried using the bible and God and Jesus and many other examples to try and get him to come around and lastly, had my gender therapist have a chat with him on the phone and he took it the wrong way. *sigh* Needless to say, I know he'll ever change his ways and he's told me so but I already knew it before he told me. Yes, he IS a bigot and preaches the bible and his beliefs in the wrong way. I know NOTHING other than God almighty telling him he's wrong would ever change his mind and even THEN I am skeptical that he'd truly side with God over his Church.
So yeah, the thing you posted won't help and no one can help him to come around which sucks. That said, I really don't wish to derail the thread any further and I apologize for doing so in the first place. Feel free to PM me if you wish to talk further on this though oh and, thank you.

I sent this to my sister-in-law since one of her grandchildren is at 15, identifying as male. I'm not sure how accepting my niece is and I want my SIL to make sure her daughter reads this.

Well others might profit, too...
I'd not go into a too deep discussion about exact words or expressions.
I'd say religion should be about love.
And there are people with birth conditions.
Many people now say being transgender has to do with development before birth.
There are studies showing that there are differences in brains of men and women, and autopsies showed that the brains matched those of the gender people identify with.
There are even substances known to cause this, there were substances used which caused a higher rate of tg people which are off the market now.
So imo its the same with other birth conditions... people should support each other in love and help each other.

@Laura: To what you said, I've already told him that in my arguments (again, both peacefully and at times not peacefully) many a time. He ignores it, cites his belief and also calls those study's, politics. -_- Point is, we both know what he SHOULD be doing, but he isn't and never will.
@the article: To be honest I'm surprised it mentions it's only 40% because I could've sworn the rate was higher than that.

Well it might help citing that there should be love behind the words... and not only written expressions...
its that people look for points to validate their views...
if pointed out that their standpoint is not coming from a point of love it might help...
words have been translated over up to three languages and should not be taken literally imo anyways...

It is hard when you come out and try to transition because you don't want to be suicidal any more and then everyone around you acts like you're dying anyway :D Sorry that's super negative but there you go
Also @Shana-chan: when people list reasons I'm not male i like to (mentally to avoid arguments) list reasons they're not the gender they were assigned either (my mother builds things and is tall! my dad washes dishes and is short!). It won't change their opinions but it makes me feel a bit better about myself.
