I'm in tears right now.
I've been full-time for over a year now, but I only came out to my grandparents about three months ago, via a letter (they live in a different city). Their response was unbelievable, specially grandpa's, as he's very old school and quite sexist (even though his children have shielded my generation from seeing that).
We still haven't met since then, and we hadn't talked on the phone either. But today is their titanium wedding anniversary, my mother went to visit them, and my dad said we should call them. I was dreading even talking on the phone with them, because I was afraid that even if they said they were OK with my transition, being that old they would simply have a hard time gendering me correctly and calling me by the right name.
Well, I was wrong. The call was brief, but that's normal, they still don't get used to phonecalls from here not being long distance, but they had no problem calling me by my name!
It looks like it's easier for them than it is for my mom!
Now let's see how it goes next month when I go to their city for my grandpa's 99th birthday.

Yay! When I read your first line, I was ready for the worst. So glad it was a pleasant surprise!
