In my line of work it's pretty routine to face opposition. I help teachers and administrators create safe, welcoming, and inclusive elementary schools for children across the nation. It sounds tame in the reading, but in some places such work can have a disruptive and disturbing effect. Because what I'm really talking about is difference. And difference can generate fear, and fear can be very motivating.

But last week I was lucky enough to be in a place where when fear reared its head, a community did not succumb to hateful rhetoric and, instead, responded with overwhelming love and support. All I can say is thank you Liberty Counsel — your attempt at fearmongering didn't work. In fact, it brought out the very best in the people of Mount Horeb, a small town in southern Wisconsin.

Mt Horeb is a cool little town. Just outside is Circle Sanctuary, a Pagan/Wiccan Spiritual Center and the people I've met there were very open-mined, warm and friendly. It's heartening to see a town reject fear. On the other hand you would think an organization with Liberty in their name would be Pro-Liberty but I guess they think their Liberty is to deny others their Liberty. How sad,

Story brought tears to my eyes. I was really frustrated when I heard the initial story of the reading being cancelled. Nice to know it all had a happy ending. Once we've opened a mind, it will never close again.

I know Jazz Jennings is a celebrity who feeds on publicity like any other, but I still admire her for her courage and for the way she has been able to put a positive face on transgender youth. She's 40 years younger than I am but I still think of her as a role model. I hope in my life I'm able to make a fraction of the difference that she has for our community.

There is more to the story.

Last week Mt. Horeb's school board voted for protections for trans students.  That includes bathroom access and states that transgender children cannot be forced to use a unisex facility.

Liberty Counsel's attempt at censoring what students read has backfired big time!
