Hi all,

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good voice therapist? I live in the NY area, however I am open to Skype appointments with someone in a different location.

I have only been practicing my voice for about two months using Finding Your Female Voice and Eva Voice. I know it takes much longer than this, however I'm not sure if I am even practicing the right way. I don't feel like I am getting anywhere and I think it would be worth paying for a therapist to get me on the right track. I am willing to put in the time, but I'm worried about spending months practicing only to end up in the same spot. Let me know if you have any recommendations.

I do recommend Christie Block at the New York Speech & Voice Lab. (She's easily found on Google as I don't think I'm allowed to post a direct link here.) Her office in on Broadway in the financial district near Wall St. She does individual session and she also does two sets of group voice classes that are very reasonable. The beginner class is usually in the early Spring and the more advanced class in the early Fall. Her phone# is: 347-677-3619. I did the advance class last year since I taught myself the basics.

I was also referred to Irene Kling.

Speech therapists aren't cheap but for some people they are worth it.

I dont know about you but Im going to get vocal surgery.

If you feel that it's the right decision for you then go for it. It certainly was for me.

So you had good results with vocal surgery? All I have heard about is how risky it is and how it doesn't usually work good. I'm not planning on doing it, but I am interested in hearing about a good outcome.

Sure. There is a whole forum section dedicated to vocal therapy and surgery. I've posted my results there as have many others.

There are some who have had less than satisfactory results but I think the majority of people tend to have a good result.

That said it can't change resonance and some people don't get much of a pitch increase while some do get a lot of pitch increase and they still sound male. There is resonance and prosody which you can only fix with training.

So even if you have surgery you may have to do some training. I lucked out in that all I needed was a pitch increase (I spoke like a woman pre op and my resonance issues are close to nil) but some others aren't so lucky.

In my case I was getting frustrated with training so I just went and got the surgery.
