Title: Trans friendly colleges?
Post by: Everettwith2ts on December 23, 2015, 10:46:16 PM
Hi I'm ftm 18 bc of bc of some complications (hospital stays, etc.) I will be graduating high school in about a year and a half
I want to start binding and cut my hair short when I go to college, as I have a very unsupportive family atm and cannot while I live at home. My mom will not even allow me to cut my hair short since I came out as lesbian at 13 when I thought I was cis so I don't want to risk coming out as trans when I can't even get a haircut.

I was wondering if anyone knew of colleges that were trans friendly, especially in terms of housing. If one does not exist I don't especially mind bunking with a girl but I was hopeful that there was one out there where i could room with a boy.
I want to major in animation if that's helpful and I live in the US.

I cannot answer specifically to that but have you researched any LGBTQIA+ friendly colleges in general?

Most colleges will tell you their policy with respect to housing trans students. Nearly all colleges in this day in age have some policy or other.

If you're wondering how LGBT friendly the college is, consider asking whether there is a Gay/Straight Alliance or other LGBT student organization. If there isn't, give it a pass. If there is, consider getting in touch with them and asking them what life is life for LGBT students.

Campus Pride Index (http://www.campusprideindex.org/) is definitely a good resource. That's what I've been using this year in my college search. You can narrow your search down to location in certain characteristics and go off from there.

One way to to narrow down your choices is to visit the web pages for each campus's LGBT center. You can find out a great deal about health care, support groups, and campus resources.

Once you narrow down to a large handful of possible schools, get in touch with their LGBT centers. You can get a lot of insider information this way. The centers might also be willing to give you contact information for allies and other trans students on campus.

I do animation too!
I had a college fair in my school and of course, I've told the art colleges I am a trans guy and they responded with support about their colleges. Some Trans friendly colleges are: College for creative studies (you can do it online), The art institute (Online, too!)
Try checking out https://www.campuspride.org/  which is for LGBTQIA+
Good luck!

If you were to have a problem, it would not be with the college administration but with a minority of the other students.  And the major you wish to undertake is probably the most friendly place you could choose to be.

What colleges are you looking at right now? With a little searching of their websites you can usually find their LGBTQ+ center webpage pretty quickly if they have one. That's what I've been doing :) good luck!
