Hello everyone,
Does anyone has some experience of transitioning with a congenital heart defect?
I have one and I got told last September that It might be either dangerous or impossible to transition, and that I would get the results the next time I see them, which *should* be in February. But that might turn to April for all I know.
Anyhow, it's been torturing me ever since, and I hoped someone might have had experience with this.
My heart defect is a mix of several things, but one of them is is Septal defect and a misplacement of the Aorta. I've had the Fontan procedure done to me, around 10 years ago, if that's of any help.
Furthermore, I want to add that I am otherwise in excellent health and shape and my cardiologist is frequently dumbfounded because I'm 'doing too well' and 'I'm not supposed to be able to go mountain hiking,'.
Thanks in advance.

I am not sure why hormones would be a problem. I can see where the blockers could be an issue and if that is the problem then you should consider HRT without blockers. It doesn't work as well but but that was how we transitioned before blockers were available.

They said the problem would be (pulmonary) thrombosis. I already have a reduced blood circulation as it is and estrogen tightening the veins could make it easier for blood clots to form.

Things you could talk with your doctor about. They can measure clotting factor so they could slowly increase the dosage and watch for danger signs. The patch might be the preferred method of delivery as oral has a higher risk and injection can't be quickly undone. It also might be desirable to do low dose aspirin or an anti clotting medication along with HRT. You may already be doing some of this as a part of your normal care but I posted it just in case.

So I'm not sure how this compares with your heart condition, but these are my experiences:
I had a heart attack last April and was also very afraid that my heart condition would prevent me from taking hormones. So I consulted with my cardiologist and he told me that estrogen actually has a preventive effect. It creates a little protective layer on the inside of you arteries. Some research in that field indicates that you will probably be recommended to ingest hormones via your skin rather than orally. But it probably won't prevent you from taking them, the way I understand it.
From http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24616414 (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24616414):
MtoF should not be treated with oral ethinyl estradiol. Transdermal estrogens are probably safer than oral estrogens. Pre-existing cardiovascular risks should be taken into consideration when prescribing and choosing the type of estrogens in cross-sex hormone administration (oral vs transdermal). In addition, risk factors, as they emerge with aging, should be addressed.

According to any and all research I've conducted, transition should indeed be possible with dermal patches and frequent checkups. I just have a nagging anxiety my gender clinic refuses to cooperate if they find it too risky. And yeah, if they keep refusing I'll have to move on to DIY, because I can't live as a male for a whole lot longer. Thanks for the information, btw.
