Title: Stopping body hair growth
Post by: byanyothername on December 26, 2015, 04:28:37 AM
So I'm waiting for my first GIC appointment but in the meantime my usually hairless chest has started sprouting hairs at an alarming rate. My Dad turned into a gorilla man at about the age I am now and I'm terrified to be honest.

I'm getting extremely uncomfortable about this and don't know what to do. Is there anything I can do? I feel really stuck :-(

Well the ideal would be to get on hormones asap.  But laser or electro will clear up what's there.

Which gic are you waiting for?

It will be at around a year before they start prescribing and that is a long time to watch your body change in the wrong direction.

A GP can prescribe  hormones in the interim, but they rarely do.

I'm waiting for Northampton which has the shortest waiting list but I don't expect to be seen before March really...if all goes well I wouldn't be starting HRT until August really. laser seems counter intuitive because it is just going to get worse but I think it's my only option :-( argh!

I think you would be lucky to get put forward for it by September, on appointment 2,  but chances are you will get put forward in December on appointment 3 as that is standard practice. Then you will have to do blood works and have an appointment for the endo, that's another 3 or so months wait.  It will probably be early to mid 2017 I would guess. If you are very lucky it may be the tail end of next year. Of course if you don't have your name change and social transition done already, with evidence like deed polls and pay slips, you an add time to that.  I don't mean to be negative, but it's best to be realistic.

Thanks kira. I didnt realise that not socially transitioning would cause a delay, it's quite sad to hear that actually :-(

I'm hoping that I'll be at appointment 3 by September as others who have been to Northampton have managed an appt every 3 months. It's such a long road but I guess there is plenty to work on in the meantime!

Thanks for the advice :-D

You can print out the interim guidance and show it to your Gp.  It says about bridging endocrine treatment and that they can choose to provide it if it's necessary. You will need to be persuasive and lucky though.

You could also get them to do a script for fenasteride.  They do that for hair loss but they usually only do private prescriptions for it.  Its a dht blocker that might help.
