Title: Jennifer or Jordyn?
Post by: JordynA on January 12, 2016, 10:43:31 AM
I'm 20 now, I realized when I was 14 yrs old; I felt more comfortable in masculine clothing, men haircuts, years passed and I'm looking at doing the FTM surgery. With little support from family and friends, I'm struggling to find answers that I need to make this step easier. Looking back at my past, I was supposed to be a baby boy when I was born, growing up I was always outside getting muddy and playing rough, jumping from high heights an trying to master a plan to jump from the barn attic, this is who I was, comfortably and easily. Reckless and carless. I feel that I should identify as female until the transformation is complete, however I feel more like Jordyn than Jennifer. I wear mens clothing, and my significant other is aware that this change is in my mind, she loves me for who I am, and is my main source of support. However, I live in an area with little resources and transportation for support groups etc. I found Susan's through another program I am involved in.After being referred to as Jennifer for 20 years, is it normal to be afraid to have people start referring to me as Jordyn?

Change is scary. Public change is focused scary. Yes, I think it is really quite normal to be frightened by any part of a "coming out" experience".

Welcome to Susan's. There are a lot of great people with good advice here. Very supportive.

I am not sure who it is most important to, as to when you are called what? That can only be answered by you. The only challenge with it seems to be from misgendering and/or dead naming.

I can't really give you any advice, I am in position to. However, I wish you love, acceptance and a smooth journey.

I imagine a moderator will pop on here and give you some links to the policies.

With warmth,

Joanna

Jordyn, a name is just a name. I changed mine last year and have gotten so used to it I have to think what it used to be. Not that I ever need to use it any more. When I get mail in my old name I have to remember that used to be me. Just realized I used the phrase, "used to be me". Eventually your own name will be as comfortable as ever.

There will be many things ahead of you that will seem frightening. With friends and understanding you can travel as far as you want. As for changing your gender, it's all up to you when you want to be called something else. There are no hard and fast rules nor do you have to have any surgeries. You are who you are and who you want to be, when you want to be.

Love,
Clare
