Brooklyn creep gets 20 years for brutal plexiglass attack on transgender woman

Before a Brooklyn man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for seriously injuring a transgender woman, he made a last ditch effort to throw out the verdict by revealing he knew a juror.

Mashawn Sonds was quickly found guilty by a jury last month for swinging a two-by-four piece of plexiglass at Kimball "Kimy" Hartman's head in October 2014 after his co-defendant Tyquan Eversley verbally and physically assaulted her with anti-gay slurs.

The impact from Sonds' swing caused Hartman to fall backwards on her back, subsequently, slamming her head on the sidewalk of Bushwick Ave.

Finally some justice! He should have gotten the full 25  years (IMHO) but at least he'll be off the street for a very long time. Unfortunately violence against transgender people seems to be on the rise in other parts of the world given the number of murders in Brazil and Mexico.

So glad to read this news!  Political candidates go on all the time about how transgender people want "special rights."  How about our right to be secure from violent attack?  That's not a "special right."  It's one that we should share with everyone.

And that's why I don't want to live in an area like TN that doesn't have anti-hate laws to help protect LGBT individuals. In some areas the creep would have only gotten a slap in the wrist.

Personally, I'm not fan of anti-hate laws.  It truly doesn't matter to me if he assaulted her because he wanted her money, didn't like the color of her skin, or wanted to make a political statement on her medical history.  I think he should have been thrown under the jail for the act, regardless of the reason.  I just think one law for assault makes more sense than 6,000 for every conceivable demographic.
