Title: Thinking about starting progesterone
Post by: RavenL on January 22, 2016, 09:34:16 AM
I just had my follow up with my endo yesterday. She was happy at the rate I'm going after little over two months. And I'm starting to up my dose of estrogen over the next month and a half.

Now the question I have she told on my next appointment in four months or if I want to sooner she'll prescribe progesterone to me. She's happy with my breast development after such a short period of time. And said since I have breasts now I can fill them out. I told her maybe in two months I'll consider asking for it.

So my questions are. How bad is the weight gain on it? Right now I'm actually losing weight since I'm ten pounds down from two months ago. I really don't want to gain weight as I'm getting happy with my figure. I've done reading and it can make you depressed as well. I've been diagnosed with severe depression and taking anti depressants.  Will my risk for depression increase on progesterone?

I guess that's all I can think of at the moment. Still have some time to think about but just wanted to get some opinions and see if it's worth it.

I did not gain weight on progesterone.  I have used it since the start and lost weight and inches.  It also did not make me depressed.  YMMV

Ask for bioidentical progesterone.
It works better on receptors and is supposed to be less causing depressions.

You might try a cycle of 10,14 or 20 days, or use it continous.

People react differently.
Some feel bloated with continous use.
Some people have mood swings with cycling.

You might try what is best.

Many people say it helped with breast form, getting more rounded and full instead of conical.

Depends on how much estrogen/progesterone you are taking, what type of progestogen you are taking. Bio-identical progesterone is safest.

QuoteRight now I'm actually losing weight since I'm ten pounds down from two months ago. I really don't want to gain weight as I'm getting happy with my figure.

If you are happy with things as they are right now, why change anything? You can wait and eventually add it just to see. If you don't like overall results, stop it. Simple as that. :)

This has been noted on medroxyprogesterone acetate (and cyproterone acetate). Bio-identical progesterone actually can improve depression. It converts to a neurosteroid allopregnanolone which has sedative, anxiolytic, anti-depressant properties. Read actual studies about it. Estradiol also has anti-depressant/anxiolytic properties. It is VERY important you learn about the differences in progestogens, they don't all affect the body the same way; some doctors sadly ignore this.

I take prometrium which is bio identical. I take it continuously. So far so good. However I've gained 5lbs. I haven't made a huge effort to lose it but I'm wondering if I should or if I should just leave it until my breast development slows. I was 155lbs now I'm 160lbs.

Well a bit of weight gain might not be bad if its in the right places ... like on hips and breasts  :)

I do go to the gym. It helps.

Let me put it this way - someone asked me "boy or girl" once. I was confused because I thought I was clocked. Then I said,"excuse me?" And the person said,"are you having a boy or a girl?" I just said no, I'm not pregnant, I'm just a little fluffy lol. Affirming on the one hand but shows how fat I am on the other

Increased muscle tone may help burn more fat but if one eats the wrong types of foods, one will just be hungrier and re-accumulate that lost fat PLUS some hormones make it very hard for the body to let go of the fat, it's just how it works. In my experience, I found the single greatest contributor to weight regulation is hormones, be it stress hormones, thyroid hormones, sex hormones, growth hormone and insulin which is strongly affected by what we eat. Eat the right types of food so as not to overstimulate insulin, keep your stress to a minimum, take enough of the right hormones depending on your gender, be sure your thyroid is fine and things should be ok. Exercise helps tone the body, is healthy for the body and mind but in the big picture, in my experience, does little on its own to reduce fat accumulation.

My 2 cents...

Everyone thanks for the advice everyone! Its given me something to think about for the next couple of months. Right now if I had to choose I'd most likely decide to try it. Since I do want full breast development. Gaining a little weight might not be bad for me since I'm only 165lbs and have lost weight since starting HRT.
