"State Sen. Ron Alting. the man behind Indiana's push for gay rights dropped this LGB bomb Monday.  Alting said "Its (transgender visibility) is so new to legislators and the public I might add, has trouble getting their hands around it understanding it' Alting continued "Gender language would not be in the best interest of Hoosiers and would not be in the best interest of the sexual orientation (effort) for equal rights. Period.'"

Pragmatic or bigoted? Glad I am not a Hoosier

He may well be right from a pragmatic point of view, but he's still throwing us under the bus.

Please forgive my ignorance but what is a "Hoosier"? I am an Australian and the only thing that I have ever seen the word "Hoosier" directly applied to were older racing car tyres. I guess I should shut up and read the article written for us all on this wonderfully helpful site.
I'm only asking for two reasons which are as follows: Firstly I'm a bit of a geek where car racing's history is concerned (Jim Clarke and Jack Brabham are heroes of mine) and secondly I am, naturally, a transgender person who has only very recently embarked on her journey. I am not being flippant.

Hoosier is a nickname for people from Indiana.

I watched the video and while the politicians are ready to ignore us the LGBT organizations themselves are not.  So there is good news here.

Also interesting was the Christian leader who said opposing any protection for the T is War. 

For once, I agree.  It is war and the stakes are high.

Thanks for the explanation girls, now I know. However it is horribly disturbing to read that an entire state is suffering from this.

Gertrude wow! Nuvolari was easily the most courageous "pedaller" of two wheels and four to take to the world's race tracks! His victory of the Mille Miglia in 1933 (I think) which he achieved during a night stage without headlamps was unbelievable, as was his motorcycle grand prix with two broken legs! Jackie Stewart cared about his fellows and in '72 arranged a driver's strike to help ensure that safety measures be undertaken besides also winning three world F1 championships alongside knowing to quit while ahead. Clever, skilled and brave. Two more of my heroes that I most certainly pay homage to every chance I get!
I apologise that my knowledge of Mark Donahue is lacking except to state that during a certain era he must have been well known among what I now know to be Hoosiers for a certain 500 mile drive. And didn't he race in my home's premier touring car event?
I also love the Can Am and the Trans Am. Ah the 70's.....when Americans understood that horsepower can rule with grandeur. Gorgeous era, gorgeous cars. Don't worry, I've only just embarked on my MTF journey but I will probably always love car racing.

Sorry everyone, I was distracted from the frightening politicised/political statements that are under examination here and I WILL NOT DO IT AGAIN. I understand that transgender people, even ones taking their first few steps like myself, have much more salient matters to consider than their obsessions with their hobbies.

I hope organizations are stepping up... otherwise, my money can go elsewhere. Gay rights really aren't my problem either but I want gay people to not have to worry about being discriminated against. I wish they would look at trans rights this way.

I believe that LGBT organizations need to step up and stand with transgender people for trans rights. If they don't it won't be long before the enemy will come after them. This guy reminds me of Barney Frank, the congressman who threw trans people  under the bus back in 2007.

What galls me is the hypocrisy of so many LGBT organizations; they're all about being inclusive until the goals of the G are met, and then it's "Our work here is done. YOU PEOPLE need to stand up for yourselves now."

It's true that not all of them behave this way (a big shout-out here to one of our local groups, OutFront Minnesota (http://www.outfront.org/), which, with same-sex marriage a done deal, is now focusing big-time on trans rights). It's also true that many groups are having a much harder time raising funds now that the needs and wishes of the G are largely satisfied.

But most politicians will happily ignore or betray the poorer, less powerful folks among their constituents. The combination of "They don't give me money" and "Who else are they gonna vote for?" typically wins out over whatever vestiges of ethics or responsibility they may still possess.

What the senator demonstrates to us that he's more worried about getting reelected than doing the right thing. Unfortunately we are only 1-1.5% of the vote (we're more than the self reported.3%, but not big enough to matter in jesusland).

Well, I imagine the trans people living in those places care.  Not everyone has the option to uproot and move, for lots of reasons.

Where there's a will there's a way. All of us have ancestors that made a trek to get here often under more difficult circumstances than what we have. I think we forget that and we forget we're capable of more than we think. Sometimes I think we have an entitlement attitude. too. I've seen it with localized economic downturns where people wouldn't move to were the opportunities were. Our ancestors did, why can't we?

Lots of people care about Indiana.  We want equal rights everywhere.  When many state laws fall into lockstep over a civil rights issue, the federal government can be moved as well.

The lbgq only wants the t so we will help push their agendas once that's done they toss us away til the next agenda arises then they want the t back til said agenda is over then back out the back door goes the t. This is why I will never join the lbgq for any reason and choose instead to just stand alone defending my right to exist. I'm T and proud.

Okay folks. Lets please watch our language. Secondly, we may not all care about every place, but we need to be considerate of those who do and live there. Bashing a state or place is still bashing even though your not bashing an individual. Lets please keep it civil and the following TOS in mind.

This is a well known political technique. It's called "divide and conquer". You come up with a provision that only some of your opposition will oppose, while it benefits the rest. Then you stand back and watch them fight amongst themselves.

Understandable why our enemies would try to do this. Baffling why we are falling for it.

In a perfect world, the government recognizes and protects rights, not grant them, which puts them at the whim of authority of the party currently in power. Instead they are used as currency to bribe our vote and for money.
