Title: About college
Post by: MilesH on January 24, 2016, 07:08:32 PM
Hi! I'm Miles, I'm FtM and a high school junior. I don't plan on coming out fully until college (my parents and a couple trans/genderqueer friends already know because I needed support lol). So to you all in this forum who are trans and have some experience with college applications, how'd you go about the application process, or how do you plan to do it?

If you fill out FAFSA forms, your legal gender must be used, for the colleges themselves, I'm not sure. Of course this only counts if you are going to school in the USA. I believe you can inquire for help with this with student services, either at your high school or at one of the colleges where you plan to apply.

What LordKAT said is true. All the official documents must be in your legal name and gender, FAFSA and applications included. Some schools may include a line for preferred name. What I would do is submit all your documentation and contact the admissions office to see if there is maybe a field on their end where they can update your preferences. If the school has an LGBT social or support group like many do, they may be able to help you get things sorted out once you're admitted.

I would say that put on the forms whatever you will be presenting as. So if you are waiting until college put the gender that represents you pre-transition but if you want to start expressing before college put male. Hope this helps! You
