Title: YouTube and Trans People..
Post by: Matthew on January 25, 2016, 06:30:15 PM

I was browsing YouTube tonight, bored, and stumbled into a video made my a very popular vlogger (with over 2 million followers) where he pulled up images of trans* people and made (mostly inappropriate) comments.
Crazily, I saw a transgender couple in the video who I know very well in real life and would consider friends. While they weren't openly mocked, I felt his comments were disrespectful and definitely hurtful, and the image he had in the video included pre transition images of both of them. Seeing as the video had over 600,000 views, it's been on my mind a fair bit.
While I doubt YouTube itself will take any action against the person who made the video, I want to know if I can do anything, it doesn't feel right to not try to take some form of action.

You might contact Glaad. They have a media watch group. I know they mostly target mainstream media, but they might be able to help.

You could send him a message and explain why it is offensive, if you think he can be reasonable.
Or you could report it to YouTube with the same explanation and hope that they are reasonable.

I'm not entirely sure , but if the people whose images are on there asked YouTube to remove them , I'm guessing they would.

I think I know which YouTuber you are talking about, Matthew. This person is very disrespectful and inconsiderate of trans people. All their posts focus on humiliating us. His crap really does need to be removed....
While I've never clicked on any of his bs videos, I just see the title, the picture and his username and think "What a first class hater!" >.>

Some of these people are doing this to gain attention with high ratings. A lot of people do get their jollies off of hate. I don't like commentators who compress speech without pauses using a video editor either. On the other hand, The transition timeline videos get numbers in the millions with a lot of nice comments. A MtF surgery video gets over 7.6 million viewers. I suppose most of those viewers of TG videos are voyeurs. It could be just me.

people simply are obsessed/fascinated with the physical transition of trans people, the thing is that onision is very transphobic (on social media too) and uses trans titles as clickbait to get more views.

Yes, the user was Onision.
I was considering writing to him personally about the issue, but if you've seen him on social media he doesn't seem to be too open to criticism, and I'm going to guess that he will either not read it (due to the huge amounts of hate mail he receives) or it will be ignored.
I was trying to work out whether or not the video violates YouTube's community standards, and they have been known to be a bit 'wishy-washy'.
Thanks for the input

He has been pretty transphobic in the past. I get pissed off at transphobic people as much as the next person, but some people can change. He released a video on his channel as a form of "apology". I'm a bit skeptical, but he seems fairly convincing. That being said, he's kind of obnoxious.

I saw this a while ago, while it is nice that he released this I do questions his motives for posting it - seeing as anything trans seems to be trending right now, in my opinion he's covering for himself whilst also jumping on the bandwagon here.

I sadly knew who were talking about right away...
Overall for transphobia on YouTube, I originally started by trying to explain things to people, then overtime just decided it wasn't worth it. Now I just stay in the little group of channels that I know won't attract too much negativity, and if they do, the channel owners are good at clearing the comment section.
I am bothered by how many of my friends watch onision's videos though....

Don't hate me for this-- but I actually watch a bunch of his videos. I feel like he attacks groups, (not just transgender) in a way to get likes but he also sticks up for a bunch of groups he attacks... like he is using jokes to make points. For example, he attacked women's figures and then uses the jokes to explain why women of every shape, size, and color are beautiful when they are comfortable within themselves. Or another set where he made fun of emos and cutters to point out why depression or suicide is a real non laughing matter and he sometimes even puts links to help holiness at the end of videos

I do as well, his comedy is often distasteful, but for those of us who enjoy offensive comedy it's pretty funny - although the videos where he pulls up images of people on google and mocks them crosses a thin line - especially images of trans people as trans acceptance is still a huge issue.

I remember watching him when he was a bit more innocent. I remember "I'm a banana". And now, I've forgotten about this user. I unsubscribed a while ago after he started making a few comments towards lgbt characters. And it seems now that he's taking it to the real world.

You might tell youtube to pull the video because it was not done with the consent of all the people shown there.
Obviously people are shown in a condescending manner and did not agree to be shown this way.
I'd rather stay away from such people ... its like people dragging oher people down ...

Reading this topic title, I thought this was going to be about trans people who post videos, and I went from :D to D: real quick. Running into this thing can be very frustrating, but I don't know that anything can be done about it, if the person is of a certain obnoxious, stubborn type. Like, if they know they're being offensive and they're doing it on purpose, I don't know what you can do about that other than ignore them (or fight them, but I doubt that's actually useful).
edit: watching the video posted in the thread, it seems strange for him to post something like that after posting a nasty transphobic video...
