Title: Crap
Post by: GarryLynn on February 05, 2016, 09:59:30 AM
Well for the past week I've been using the females restroom more than the neutral restroom now, my principal just talked to me and there have been complaints for a boy in the girls bathroom, I mean I don't look like a boy, I have long hair, makeup, girls clothes. That doesn't really matter I guess but it's turning into a big issue quickly at my school. I honestly didn't think about the consiquences, but what should I do now? Use the gender-neutral restroom? Or stand up for myself and use the restroom I please? I have a lot of support but that wouldn't really matter against the people against it :/

You might try getting a letter from you doctor. This could help clear up bathroom issues. Also a therapist or even the school counselor chiming in could help.  I'm normally all up for you standing up for yourself, but in the end going through the principal will probably be necessary. How supportive are your parents. They would be the best advocates to insure your access to the restroom that matches your gender identity. Hugs

There may be laws and guidelines in your area or your school system. If you are in the U.S., the federal government has issued guidelines that require allowing transgender students to use the bathroom that corresponds to their gender.

Do you have a local LGBT support organization, such as PFLAG, or rainbow youth? You should have some help. This is too big a battle for you to want to fight on your own.

How you look won't matter much if you are known as "male" at the school. Have you told them you are trans?

well, you can fight it like others are doing in the news or given the fact that gender neutral is basically what is happening in the stores and commercial outlets and other public places , so it's really nothing that is terribly wrong. I understand the need to feel right, but when I'm out in the city I just use what is around. depending how I look I'll use an appropriate  restroom. I know I feel the need to use the proper restroom according to my proper gender, but it's not a big deal when it comes to gender neutral washrooms. Given the fact that everyone knows you, you  can either fight it in the courts where it most likely go if the school decides to fight or just let it go given that everyone knows your status .

Well I have the school on my side but people are still going to be upset, and complain, and parents will come in, and the staff will get heat, I've decided to keep using the neutral bathroom this school year, it's really the older students that are the issue, but maybe senior year I'll be able to use the female restroom

I think you should talk to the administration or a counsellor and explain what is happening. Then (hopefully) that should clear up the issues. Stand up, but in a constructive way!

Depending where you live, you most likely have the right to use the female restroom under anti-discrimination laws. Explain it to your principal or you could talk to the school counsellor and have them talk to the principal. Another good idea would be to get a letter from your doctor or therapist, if you have one, explaining the situation. If worst comes to worst, you could try and just not use the bathrooms at school and make sure you go before you leave; but that shouldn't be necessary.
