How did LGBT History Month get hijacked by the gay community's worst enemy?

When I heard the theme of this year's LGBT History Month in Britain was religion, my heart sank. . . .
What is there to celebrate about religion's part in our history? It is one continuous catalogue of persecution, discrimination and hatred leading sometimes to lethal consequences.
-------------------------------------------------
Back when I was still heavily involved in Church I had a conversation with a man about LGBT. I was not out in any way but still at least borderline supportive in that environment. What he said was shocking to me. Without hesitation, "They should all be killed." And this was not even a fundamentalist Church.
This article is is correct in every way!

I would disagree with this blanket statement from the article:
This is false. Unitarian Universalism contains no such doctrine.
I generally agree with a lot of what is said in the article, but I can't condemn religion in general, only certain religions.
QuoteEvery religion, without exception, has doctrines opposing gay love.

And more specifically, it's individuals within a religion who are hostile, not the faith itself.
Fwiw, having a "theme" of religion this year is not the same as "hijacking." Some LGBTQ people have profoundly positive experiences with the spiritual aspects of a religion, and they should be allowed their day in the sun. That's not celebrating dogma.

Actually, in the case of Christianity, if you study Church history from the beginning it is the faith itself which is hostile, and it stems from its foundational text.
It is only within the last half generation that a minuscule number of people have shown any degree of tolerance at all, basically by ignoring what their scriptures actually say. The vast majority worldwide do not accept LGBT at all. And for the majority of Christian history LGBT was a capital offense.

Never had any agro from anyone at my local Methodist Church, 3 M2F, 1 F2M , 2 lesbians & a gay man in the congregation on Sunday. It's like saying all people from the southern states are in the KKK, a blanket statement. While there are some KKK members not everyone from the south is or believes in them

Liberal Christianity is supportive in general. (including now the Church of England), Quakers, Unitarians, and more. Catholicism is coming around, the average Catholic has no issues from my experience. The Pope is way liberal now. Religion changes with society. I'm encouraged by the progress i see.
The fundamentalists and extremists will always fight change and knee jerk react to it, but they are becoming fewer in number.

I've addressed this issue like a million times by now.
The basic concept of religion is not an enemy to anyone, and concluding that all religions are bad because of how the major world religions have been acting is just plain wrong.
Plus, the followers of these bigger religions are not all like that. Some are, sure, but not all. A good thing to remember before starting to criticise anyone's religion.

Religion really is a mixed bag. The idea of it has both helped and hurt LGBT people in different ways. Many mainstream religious groups want us dead, but some people also find their lives improved by it when they don't. I still can't agree with the theme being tied to LGBT history month anywhere because it's not really a positive part of the LGBT movement background. How are we supposed to celebrate that as a whole? I won't start bashing religion, but does it really belong in a place like that?
