Title: Funny things happen when your trans
Post by: stephaniec on February 22, 2016, 01:34:17 PM
It's pretty funny to see peoples reactions to your voice if your not trying the female pitch. I'm at Starbucks and one of the barista's that I know stopped to talk to me and I didn't ty to change my voice and the female student sitting next to me and gave me a look when I opened my mouth . I might of surprised her. My avatar is me today.

Yesterday I was at the pet store looking for fish food.  I was dressed more or less male.  A clerk came by and asked a nearby man "can I help you sir?"  Then she asked a nearby woman, "can I help you ma'am?.  Then she looked at me and asked, "How about you, can I help you?"  No sir or ma'am.

I guess I don't pass as anything now.  LOL

You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.

I like to do that in company of trans women who want to know how to work on their voice. I'll give them the steps, speaking using my fem voice, and then for a few seconds lapse into my most masculine voice to show them what I used to sound like. Always gets shocked looks.

I actually get that - a lot...

Heh, there can be a lot of amusing things about being trans. I actually get a kick out of slipping back into my old 'scary man voice' around my friends. They're so used to my current voice and my old voice totally doesn't match, so it really makes them uncomfortable. I even surprised my mother one day, and used it around her. She thought there was some strange man in the house and turned around quick, lol! Fun stuff.

Funny, I have a masculine/feminine voice. It varies. But I can no longer go back to my Liverpudlian brogue.

If I'm speaking to friends my voice goes more masculine, if I'm talking to strangers it goes very feminine.

It seems I do not have control (which I hate).

Bugs me!

My voice seems to vary quite a bit, sometimes I get "ma'am", sometimes "sir", other times "you" and/or a blank stare

I've even had grocery clerks argue with each other over what to reference me as

Silly world we live in sometimes  ::)

When I'm with friends I know my voice sounds deeper, especially when it's been a lengthy discussion (or I've been drinking!). My general public voice seems to have gotten a fair bit better over the last few months, I now feel much less reluctant about using it with strangers.

Grace, Cindy, I do it too! I think a lot of us do. If someone genders me correctly on first meeting I seem to find it easier to hold my proper voice.

I do that too Grace - around friends I slip into a more neutral voice, not exactly masculine and not exactly feminine. Around strangers I find it natural and quite easy to shift into my female voice - maybe its a self preservation thing? Anyway, as time passes and I practice my female voice in my day to day life I find that my voice is naturally shifting itself higher and higher - hitting the old male voice has gotten harder to do unless my acid reflux or allergies are bothering me, then all bets are off.

One time when I was still seeing my therapist I drug out "his" voice for fun and my therapist got a horrified, shocked look on her face she and told me to never do that again

Yeah, I can barely find my male range after 6-7 months of practicing my feminine voice, but I often have to clear my throat because of reflux and this often alarms people because it sounds way more rough/masculine than my female voice.

Oh well lol.  I find it amusing more than anything.

Almost everyone only knows me as male. So sometimes when i'm trying to dig through my belongings, lipstick, eyeliner, concealer, and hair bows will all fallout.  When friends see it, they stare at me like they have no idea what's going on. About that time, i realize that i could just tell them it's my wife's stuff.  Usually, though, i'll deepen my voice and say, "got a problem?"  I get a real kick out of seeing their reactions, but i ultimately just end up wishing that i could talk to them more about my femininity.

If I'm talking to a clerk or some stranger I'll try to get my voice more female , but usually if I'm talking to people I know I'll try to keep it somewhat borderline.

Yeah my friends have been pointing out lately that my voice has become more lax... It's still in the female range but lower than it was and definitely towards the low end of that spectrum, perhaps almost teetering outside of it at times. I know it's just because I know they won't care if my voice isn't perfectly female. But, I did get a bit too lax on the phone recently and got 'sir'd'... so I think I need to make a more conscious effort to tighten up my vocal presentation. It usually isn't a problem in public though as I reflexively pitch up more.

I've never paid attention to the speech patterns of male and female. After taking hormones do you really need to be mindful everyday of how your voice sounds?

Testosterone treatment usually makes a FtM voice go deeper (often quite quickly). Unfortunately removal of T and replacement with oestrogen has no affect for MtF voices. We have to either practice, get help from a speech pathologist or get surgery to tighten the vocal cords.

With practice most MtF can control their voice but we slip up!

So are you saying after T I wouldn't have any voice problems?
