I went for my first haircut in 3 months today.  I explained that I need something that is wig-friendly (a 'short back and sides' sticking out from under a wig looks odd!), is gender neutral, and accommodates growing the hair out.  I was open to styling advice, and sort of half-expected the stylist to say that it would be best to just tolerate it being messy for a while longer.

Despite English not being her first language, I really thought she understood.  If she didn't, then the name I was using, my skirt and nail polish should have been a pretty good giveaway.

Now I have a short back and sides... and look more like a guy than ever.   Sigh...

Can anyone recommend a good wig + trans-friendly stylist in Sydney?

I got my hair colored and a very small trim off the length done at Stylz in Chatswood westfield.
I didn't really explain anything other than I wanted a more natural color that was better than a home kit and didn't want to lose any length. They were pretty good and other than I need to keep it simple and able to be tied into a little man bun I'd have got them to style it as well. Not sure of any that would be good at wig work but maybe a wig store could recommend someone.

In other news I checked out ear piercing at Chatswood chase today and they've got some pretty but plain studs that should be fine for work and only have to stay in 4 weeks. Going to think some more and maybe go on the weekend.

I get mine done at Royals in Hornsby, they are all very friendly and understanding- although can be a bit slow and you do pay for it. First time i went in i explained what i was after, i had been growing my hair out for about 9 months at the time and it was just long enough to look reasonable with a colour and trim. Since then it has filled out a lot more and, with the colour, looks quite good - although I do hate my receding hairline:(

However I have been there so that I don't have to wear a wig, so not sure how they would go with what you are after.

My problem is a large bald patch right at the crown. However, sine starting HRT, tiny light thin hairs have started growing there again. That might be a good sign.

I'll try out both those spots when another 3 months elapses and I need another trim.

OMG, that's awful! I can't blame you for wanting to go elsewhere. She obviously didn't understand what you wanted, despite how you were presenting.

I'm 9 months into growing my hair, and even though I still present male, I've made it clear to my stylist from the beginning that I'm trans and that I'm growing it into a female style that will eventually be past my shoulders. It takes so long to grow hair out, so why risk losing any more length than is absolutely necessary?  O0

I know. I wanted to scoop it all up off the floor and hold a little funeral for it.

My boss thinks it's great. I look like a neatly groomed gentleman again... [emoji19]

Ohh, well, I'll just have to sit down and work EXTRA hard at growing it out again!

If I can find a good regular hairdresser, I will just stick with them.

Thats why I stuck with the "wanky little man bun" as its known in Australia.  Not just for baristas and musos any more.
