Title: Alcohol, HRT and GRS
Post by: KarlMars on March 06, 2016, 07:32:46 PM
What do the doctors normally say about alcohol use when you're on T and around the time of GRS?

Alcohol is normally considered a bad idea all the way around. We are advised that the hormones can be hard on the liver so you don't want to risk additional liver damage with alcohol. I suspect many people ignore that advice.

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but alcohol and painkillers you get for GRS likely won't mix too well.

My doctor asked if I drank at all when I went in to start T. At the time I drank socially and she didn't mind. I'm not sure if surgeons care or not as long as you aren't drinking while taking painkillers post-op. I stopped drinking completely last year, so it hasn't come up for me in any of my surgical consults.

I drink moderately, but I intend to stop well before my top surgery. Anything a person can do to improve their physical health before surgery is well worth it, whether it's improving one's diet, exercising more, reducing stress -- it's all good and is likely to lead to a better outcome.

I quit drinking and smoking prior to surgery. I drink socially, and my doctor hasn't said to quit,  but she was very thorough in talking to me about liver damage and had my liver checked. My first three years on T I drank much more,  as I was living in Japan and it's very much a drinking culture.  Overall I'm much happier with my consumption being lower. While I had no damage done to my liver, it isn't the best idea to mix meds and alcohol. You'll want to have the conversation with your doctor and surgeon, as different doctors have different requirements.

for surgery it was required for me to stop drinking at least a week? before surgery. something like that. i drink socially only, and even then it is rare so this wasn't an issue for me.
