Title: I don't know how to style my hair like a female
Post by: blossom on March 07, 2016, 05:14:53 PM
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and I'm not sure who could help me learn?

There are a lot of hairstyle themed videos on youtube, but you would especially benefit from going to a hairstylist, and he or she will help you pick a style or styles that compliment your face shape, and if you are interested in color he or she will help you pick something that compliments your skin tone.

I suppose I could do that, but I feel scared. How can I get over feeling scared?

As a trans person, you are going to have to do some things that take you out of your comfort zone. My biggest fear was being laughed at and ridiculed, but if I didn't move forward I would be stuck in the closet, and not able to get what I needed to be a happy and whole person, so ultimately my needs became more important than the fear of being laughed at and ridiculed, and I did what I wanted to do, and went where I wanted to go. And you can to, just go to the salon and tell the stylist what it is exactly you want, and ask for advice about what will work best for your face shape  and skin tone; and if you have thinning hair ask for advice about that also. As long as you are friendly, and open about who you are and what you need, the stylist will probably go out of his or her way to help you.

VIdeos can really be helpful, but also getting an idea of your facial shape and hair situation can help us give you ideas too. Also hair salons can help too, if you feel comfortable enough to ask for help from a hair stylist. Hugs

I would Google trans friendly stylists in your area and pick one.

I went to 3 stylists and found them all helpful last year. Youtube is great as well.

But face it, if you have the money any salon that doesn't display a fish on the door will probably do your hair.

And since you live in San Francisco, you really shouldn't have any issues, especially if you are any where near the Tenderloin district.

Your the second person to mention tenderloin to me, I think you mean the Castro. The tenderloin is an impoverished and high crime area of SF. Thank you though for helping me :)

Say I am rich and I want this, this and this. Always seems to work. Money talks and nothing speaks louder.

Blossom, you live in an LGBT capitol. Almost any hair stylist can help you without judging you. Believe me, they've seen just about everything. And if you don't like the one you choose, find another.
