"When Harold Washington College student Anadarith Hurtado submitted his proposal for a research paper to his English Composition 102 professor and Harold Washington Adjunct Lecturer Alonda McCree, it read "In a constitutional land known for equality, justice and freedom for the people, there are a group that seem not to feel the same equality, justice and freedom. That group being transgender individuals that feel their rights are violated day-by-day due to their inner selves born in the wrong body.""

Sad , I started out at that school . When I went there back 1970 there were a lot of very devoted teachers that inspired me. I hope this is the case of a bad apple with a huge worm in it. It was known as Loop Jr. College back then.

For people of his ilk anything that he disagrees with always is defined as the other's behavior choice.   As a choice it can be assigned a negative moral value and ignored or discriminated against freely to benefit society.

The problem, as we know, is that no choice is involved.  That is truth.  But the opposition is not really interested in truth at all.  I have seen it time and again on conservative forums where they are presented with facts and scientific studies and then simply dismiss it all without a thought as liberal conspiracies.   That's what we are up against, a dishonest adversary, and there is no easy solution except to marginalized them by turning the bulk of public opinion around in our favor.

I'm always amazed people can be so stupid as to publicly say something like this regardless of their beliefs. Don't they have any sense of self preservation?

It does also suggest that the entire organization has a problem, that someone feels safe talking like this.

This is one I'd love to see some follow-up on. Usually academic freedom is prized, though professors are occasionally called on the carpet for racism. I wonder if transphobia would be considered sufficient grounds for action. I'd love to keep this on the radar screen.

Stephanie - First thanks for posting this for me.

I actually know another professor at HWC and they are going to attend some President's forum lunch/meeting/?? coming up and make sure something is done about this.  She is as unhappy as I am.  The professor is lucky I'm not the president of the school.  I would have packed is office for him, mailed his stuff to some far-off land and instruct security to not allow back on campus.

Great news - for LGBTQ community, not so great news for the professor...  His employment at Harold Washington College has been terminated.  They fired his sorry butt.

Just thought you all might like to know that in some cases there is justice.

It's easy to fire adjuncts....

Thank you for this important update.  I was just getting ready to fire off a letter to our Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Diversity and Inclusion Committee.  I recently served on that committee and found, not surprisingly, that our community college trustees reflect a microcosm of our culture that needs more education themselves.  The ACCT had a national meeting in Chicago last year and I presented at a session on LGBTQ concerns that i wish was better attended.  Educators need education too as life long learning helps all of us be vital, dynamic and student centric.

The use and abuse of adjuncts is yet another national issue to be addressed ;)

I deal with people saying that to me on the streets, but I find it incredibly unprofessional and inappropriate for an authority figure to say that. That comment is unnecessary and wrong. All that will do is cause more trouble for any transgender students/supporters.

It is kind of sad that I have to be careful with colleges for that reason.  :(
