Title: Transphobic surge
Post by: Amy1988 on March 27, 2016, 05:58:48 PM
Where the hell did this surge of transphobic legislation come from?  It's nation wide. A few years ago none of these politicians gave a <not allowed> about women and children and now all of a sudden they have to be protected from us.  I'm having a hard time understanding why all of a sudden the whole country has erupted in a witch hunt.

Because they lost their last hot button issue (same sex marriage) and had to scramble for a new one before their followers lost momentum. Can't have a movement, or a political party, without issues to be for or against.

Increase in trans visibility, backlash from the SCOTUS gay marriage ruling, upcoming elections?

Or, maybe, it's just a smokescreen so that other issues can be buried and not publicly dealt with..

Powerful circles in American politics and religion consciously cultivate hatred and fear among their ignorant followers in order to maintain their influence.  The specific targets of this hatred and fear are secondary to them, and can shift from time to time.  They will use whatever group is convenient to scapegoat.  Some of the groups in play this year: immigrants, Muslims, Planned Parenthood, welfare mothers, racial minorities, lesbians and gays, public employees, homeless people.  The list goes on and on.

Events of the last several years have brought transgender people more to the surface of public consciousness.  So now we join the others on the list to be defamed and stigmatized as perverts, sinners, and a menace to public order.  This is all done for the lowest and most dishonorable motives of political advantage and religious bigotry.

I'm in Canada and we are having some of the same surge in response to legislation to enshrine the rights of trans children in our schools. It's horrifying. I spend so much time being outraged at the ignorance of the populace...

That's probably the case. The majority of the public are very easily distracted. (Not to mention that they are unbelievably stupid)

Fear-mongering sells. Nothing unifies people like a common enemy, and we're one of the last groups of people it's OK to hate (in the ignorant circles which, sadly, make up so much of the US population... Sadly, also, we're disorganized and just want to be left to live in peace which makes us a great target for bullies. What people tend to forget is that this kind of behavior towards disorganized, peaceful people tends to organize and politicize them pretty quickly.
