Title: Prolactin?
Post by: link5019 on April 25, 2016, 04:40:31 PM
So I was looking over the documents from my doctor when I saw her back in March. She put down the 3 month check up for blood work to adjust levels if need be, but then she also put down, will order prolactin. I know it's a hormone that stimulates milk production, and looks like it helps with breast growth overall? I see talk about progesterone here and there but not prolactin. So I guess what I'm asking is there any benefit to prolactin? Is prolactin a part of progesterone? I'm curious how it would effect my transition overall.

Imo she means a prolactine test.

You could look here why :

Oh, so when she said "then at followup hormone bloodwork, will order prolactin as not done here."
She means that she will order a prolactin test? hmm okay. I remembered her saying something about at some point she wanted to put me on progesterone on top of the estradiol and sprio I'm taking. I guess I took the prolactin as a form of progesterone when it's not? XD Doctors notes can be so confusing.  I'm nearing the two months mark and I'm like sitting here looking at my left breast saying hey you, please start catching up a little bit please? Like it's not that far behind, but still annoying. :P

Prolactin is a hormone naturally produced by the body that is checked for diagnostic purpose. It isn't progesterone and isn't provided as a normal part of HRT. It's production can be affected by HRT and that is why it's being included in your tests. It's nothing to worry about at this stage because it's one of the many test doctors run that most of the time come back in the normal range.

High levels of estradiol can induce a prolactinoma, a tumor of the pituitary gland.  That is why prolactin levels are checked.

With kindness,

Terri
