Title: Name change question
Post by: karenpayneoregon on April 27, 2016, 06:31:25 PM
So my question is, anyone else change their last name when changing their first name or have those who are working towards a name change contemplate changing their last name?

For me, I changed both first and last name not from shame of my last name but just felt proper to do so. Also, I spent a good deal of time (months) making this decision so it was not done a whimp.

I'm also thinking of changing my last name when I change my first name as well. Not because I feel ashamed either but because I think my current last name is too feminine

Well, I consider changing my last name, because it reminds me so much of who I was and what it represents. But I guess that`s just unresolved issues with my family talking.

People on forums know me as Sidney Aldaine, but that`s just my author`s nickname. I think your surname represents not only you, but also your legacy, where you come from and it`s perfectly fine to change that, depending how you feel. Will I change my family name eventually? Gosh, I wish I knew.

I saw no reason to change my last name in my case. The only point that my last name would change is if and when I marry. I have heard of people changing their last names though. It really comes down to personal preference and comfort. Hugs

I decided to keep my last name.

Not because it is from my parents but because I share it with my wife and children.

If I were alone then probably but being alone is too scary to think about for long.

When I changed my name I changed it all first, last and middle. After submitting the name change along with an affidavit explaining why I wanted to change my name the judge asked me to submit an additional affidavit explaining specifically why my last name should be changed since only given names have a gendered component. So I submitted an affidavit explaining that I didn't want anything to do with my family members who shared that last name and they didn't want anything to do with a transwoman either and he accepted that as reason enough.

I opted to keep my last name, mostly in consideration of my siblings and kids. I did get a middle name though which is cool because I never had one before!

I kind of have a neutral (and common) last name. I thought about changing it, but I would be okay with keeping my last name. I would probably change my birth first and middle name though. That is because they are very feminine and I can't stand it.
