Title: Movies you would show to cisgendered people
Post by: AGhostInMyArms on May 14, 2016, 10:41:36 PM
What films would you recommend for a cis-gendered person who didn't know the first thing about the struggles transgender or transsexual people have to face? I'll start the list.

German film Romeos, released in 2011, starring Rick Okon and Maximilian Befort. I found this the best portrayal of a trans man I've seen in film thus far. But I'm hoping someone will post a title I've never even heard of and I'll find something even better.

Boys Don't Cry features Hilary Swank playing FTM Brandon Teena

Better than Chocolate has a MTF character that is entertaining (don't remember her name off the top of my head, great movie though)

The L Word (yeah I know) introduces Moira in season 4 who transitions to Max

Orange is the New Black - Laverne Cox MTF is one of the lovely ladies on the show

If you're looking for education rather than entertainment, I would probably go non-fiction (or non fictionalised) in that I'm not sure that most movies are that informative or accurate, and they almost always tell one specific story... But also make sure you take documentaries with a pinch of salt. There's also always youtube.

I vaguely remember the movie "TomBoy" on Netflix being really good.  I think it was a foreign film, but it had subtitles.
