Title: since start of transition or before in preparation rate your addiction to shop
Post by: stephaniec on May 28, 2016, 05:20:46 PM
All my life I basically would own a t ->-bleeped-<- and pair of jeans and wear them until they fell apart. Since transitioning I've needed to totally control my impulses there are just too many things I need.

LOL let me tell you that the "addiction" to buy lots of cute things is pretty hard to resist sometimes... but i've noticed it virtually disappear now being post... maybe that's cause i have like 60 tops, 20 skirts, 30 bottoms, 10 dresses, and way more legwear than i ever needed... just not many shoes- never got into that. I think a lot of it has something to do with the hormones...

On that thought, I really should sell some of it... too bad there isn't a "Garage Sale/Classifieds" section lol ;)

I hated shopping for men's clothes and had a very minimal wardrobe. I now own three to four times more clothing than before. I would buy a tonne more more but need to be very mindful of my budget so am currently restricting my purchases at the moment.

oooh male clothes? that wasn't clear in the title, Steph... for that, i never really had any besides whatever I needed for high school, which was mostly South Park and Korn or Limp Bizkit shirts, that the girls in my click wore too. Luckily i never needed to worry about the changing rooms at Kohls back then trying on dresses since i was already naturally andro.

edit: ah ok now i see what going on... i do a lot of re-editing the post too.

Went out to pickup material to repair a screen today. Came home with 2 skirts, shorts a blouse and 4 lawn chairs. Oh, and screen material!
As a guy I hated shopping. Now any excuse is a good reason to go.

Truth. They could make clothing just more fantastic all around, but they don't...

I love to shop. I bargain shop when i can, but i spend a fair amount of time online looking at items and then go out to stores. I guess that is the opposite of how many people do it or stores would be doing better. I love the whole experience.

Before transition i was still shopping in the women's dept but just buying a bit more stealthy stuff. I'v always been a shopping person.

I definitely get into trouble shopping..... I find it can help to go into a store that doesn't really carry clothes that match with my taste so I really have to hunt for something that I like.

I'm thinking about learning to sew; it would be fun to make some of my own clothes.  I designed a pair of jeans once, and they turned out really cute.

I voted Other because I view my view on clothes prior to transitioning, or in the beginning, as initiating in the brain but being affected by testosterone.

As well, probably more importantly, there's a relative immaturity in that starting time for me (which happened many times over a several decades :) ), not to mean bad, but just figuring things out, not buying the right things, etc. So I bought things which I ended up not liking at all, wondered how I could have chosen them and so on.

Also, transitioning brought very positive body changes which negated so much older wardrobe. As I began HRT, things started calming down and leveling out in a nice way. I largely shop, yes to get nice things, but also useful things... my regular wardrobe must be practical F clothes now. So I'm more practical now, though I do splurge.

Is all this to say "addiction to non?" Hmm, not sure... I think it's more a journey of enjoying but also happily getting past that initial pre-transition and early transitioning euphoria which is both exciting but, not past it, a little awkward so I'm happy to be looking back. Onward...

That's briefly how I think I'd answer that about me... interesting question! Now I'm off shopping... ;D

Back in the early days, ('07), I was really hyped up about shopping for really girly clothes. But, I decided after a while that it just wasn't me. I went with plain women's jeans, solid color tops and women's sneakers. I find clothes shopping to be one of the most boring things on the planet. I would rather shop around for crazy Noise gear rather than clothes. I only buy clothes when I absolutely have to.

HATED shopping pre HRT, absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE shopping now. Actually almost blew a 1500$ paycheck on getting fem products, from cloths to shampoo and conditioner, ran over to Sallie's (a local hair product store with huge discounts if you have a license, which my ex does and she shops with me) spend a couple hundred in there.

I'm bad but I love it. I have other bills, so controlling my spending is next to impossible. I had to give all my paycheck to my roommate one week so he could help me make it last till next pay.

Point of the story, don't beat yourself up about it now. I have lots of really great stuff that most of it are need in my mind lol. I have deprived myself my whole life. I love shopping now because I can finally shop for the things I like and want. Like this really cute nailpolish I got yesterday. Lol

It's ok to indulge in a controlled fashion. That's what my therapist said. The control it part is what I have a problem with.  Hehe [emoji178]

I do enjoy shopping a ton more but that's because it's so different. It's not the actual shopping that I like but owning nice clothes. In the past it was a necessity you have to wear something right? Now I also want to look good :) .

I just seem to have a problem of going to the store I shop at and not coming out with a dress , but mostly thats just trying to build a decent wardrobe now that I'm full time.. I'd love just to get a lot of money to buy dresses and everything , but those are only dreams.
