Title: on Wednesday I had a experience where I turned into a deer in headlights
Post by: KristyWalker on June 11, 2016, 04:31:44 PM
I am a cashier and I was ringing up a family and the son who was between 5 and 7 years old asks me why I have nail polish on I tell the kid that "I wear it because I like to" the kid asked me if I was a boy or girl I froze for a second and said "for right now I am a boy". Did I do the right thing? I have friends on Facebook who support what I said and others who think I should have gone into me being transgender. I felt that it would be inappropriate to start that discussion as an employee helping a costumer.

I think you gave a perfect and rather graceful response.

First, did you just assume he was a boy? 'Cuz we all know how that works!

I had a similar exchange once with a child, I said that I was both.
They said "You can't be both."
I smiled, said: "Sure you can." and walked away.  :)

Hugs, Devlyn

Hi Kristy,

I think you did exactly the right thing. Five-year olds know what boys and girls are.  The concept of being transgender is probably not even a thing for a five- or seven-year old, and very likely not something the parents wanted to start discussing on their way through the check stand and as they drive home, lol.

With kindness,

Terri

I had one of these incidents last year at the gym my hair was slicked back, no makeup and i was talking to someone with out really using my feminine voice, the young girl asked "how come you dress like a girl? " I said "i am a girl" and smiled at her. She then says....oh are you a mom? (i kid you not) and my reply was " i have three kids", by then her mom came over and said.... ".... let's not bother the lady while she stretches" and smiled at me why leading her away. Very nice parent.

So yeah i think your response was absolutely great.
