Title: Dress Sizing help
Post by: Artesia on July 29, 2016, 05:29:28 PM
I am wanting to get a full length dress.  My problem is that I wear a 22W-24W top, and an 18W skirt, so I'm not sure what size dress I will need to get to fit.  I am not in a location where trying it on would be possible, so am looking to get at least close to what I need before I go get one.

Sorry about all these sizing questions, my search fu sucks, and I couldn't find it.

Its a problem starting out with a mans body and try to wear clothes tailored for a woman's body. They are built the opposite.

The top-fit with arms/shoulders is less forgiving than the hips, so you will probably have better luck if you focus more on dress sizes that fit your top and you can live with the over-size in the hips.

You might also look for separates (top and skirt) rather than a dress.

When I start hormones will my shoulders lose anything?  I am assuming I will not.  I know my hips will gain a little, but since I am over 40 I know my hips won't gain much, and then even still it will just be fatty tissue.

Basically, looking for stock stuff, until I know what my body will do.

I lost a lot in my shoulders on HRT.

I would go to a thrift store for a dress.

I've lost a lot up top too on HRT.  What used to not fit now fits just fine.  It's dropped at least two sizes.  I've lost some weight too which probably helps but there wasn't a whole lot of fat in my neck and shoulders to begin with.

Wow!  That is far more than what I thought.  I was thinking no loss, and no more than 1 size.  I hope I have similar results.

I never actually measured my shoulders, but my neck dropped 2 inches.  That makes it smaller than it has been since I was around 16 years old.

Get a cloth tape measure and take your measurements. With that you should be able to use the  sizing charts. Unlike menswear size does not really mean much as women's wear seems to differ brand to brand. Tall clothing has generally  2" extra inches in length but is also more expensive as there are a limited number of outlets. Penny's and Long Tall Sallys are two that I have used. LTS also has large size shoes if you need em.

I've always had sizing problems. Just the reverse of you being hippy and narrow high waist. One thing for sure, especially these days, there is no longer any semblance of standardized sizing. Years ago I was a size 12-14. I still have some of those old things around and they fit perfectly. Today I can buy size 8's that fit me perfectly! My closet is filled with items marked 8 to even 16!

I have to make a LOT of trips to the changing room  :(
