Just wondering if anyone has experience of this kind of thing;
My birth name and current legal name consists of a first name and two middle names (and my surname obviously). My first and one of my middle names are female names which I want to change but the other middle name is a very unusual and effectively gender-neutral one which I quite like. When I legally change to my preferred first name can I keep this as a middle name? And if I do will it make it any harder to change my gender marker further down the line?

For me middle name was not an issue. The judge who swore me in (as part of a group) gave a lecture on how the courts don't care what you want to call yourself as long as it's a valid reason.
Name change doesn't take any special documentation unlike gender change. They are unrelated in the courts eyes (but can be done at same or different times of course).
So no, your first, middle and last names have no influence on changes in gender markers.

Ditto that. You can call yourself anything you want. The court is only concerned that you're not doing it for illegitimate purposes.

You can change any part of your name for any reason provided you fill out the correct forms and pay the applicable fees. Gender marker updates are based on you having the right documentation from a health care provider and you could technically do it without having changed your name. So no, they are not tied together at all and the way you change your name should have no bearing on your ability to update the gender marker.

I presume the OP is in the USA.
It's worth noting that the rules can be quite different if you're in a country other than the USA.

Also an extension to the original question; I'm dual nationality, will I need to go through the name change process twice or can I just do it in one country and then get my other passport reissued?

It depends on whether or not the other country will recognize the name change.
