Title: Hair question

Hi all,
New girl here...big question.
I started estrogen about 4 months ago, and t-blokkers even six weeks before that. I take these on the prescribed times...
I have no receding hairline, and no baldness in the back of my head, no thinning either. My hair has a decent length (over the shoulders) and...I have to confess to being 52... :( ...but, anyway...
No baldness in the family. I'm a non smoker, non drinker, eats fruit and veggies, regularly two sunny-sides up :), has lots of movement...anyway...
So. I shed...that is normal, I finally am getting used to that. Ever since I started to wear glasses I noticed the shed. And I paniced...that was six months ago.
I brush and then, I shed...I think, some 60 hairs (comb over the bath tub), after that, some "late commers" fall out over the course of two or some hours...
But...am I at risk of losing the scalp?
I changed. In the beginning I gave it no notice, but now I realise I will (as a woman) get taxed by things like hair and breast size...so, hence my concern...
Thanks for reading and (please) responding...
Melissa

Hi ButterflyMelissa,
I want to start by welcoming you to the site. I am going to move this to a different part of the forum specifically for HRT. I think you might get more responses there.
I don't know if your shedding is something triggered by your HRT. I do know there are certain anti androgens that help promote hair growth(even re growth for some male pattern baldness-if caught early enough).
There are many others who have much more experience in answering questions like this. I will let them tackle it.
I also want to share some links with you. They are mostly welcome information and the rules that govern the site. If you have not had a chance to look through them, please take a moment:
Once again, welcome to Susan's. Look around, ask questions and join in.
With warmth,
Joanna

I am on hormones since 2004, post-op since 2005 and my T levels are very, very low. I shed many, many hairs every day and there is no sign of hair recession or balding. Have all of my hair and it's quite long, almost down to my butt. Shedding is normal, old being replaced by new hairs...don't be alarmed until you actually start seeing loss of hair on scalp.
Low T should protect you against this. You also don't seem to be predisposed genetically so that is a great sign!
Relax and enjoy every moment of your new life. :)

Yup, sheds are quite usual. Also you can get broken hairs in the shower/brush if your hair is temporary weak/dehydrated and mistake them for a shed.
Not much to worry about.

Hi Wednesday,
Well, my hair has gone pretty dry. Before I was on patches, may hair was thick and fatty, not a nice picture to look at. A colleagie advised a coloring, just to protect the hair and get a new healthier look. Of course ;D once started, you never stop...
And yes, what KayX mentioned...quite some gets left inthe comb/brush....
And, on an up note (well, this whole thing is an up note) - a colleague complemented me today, she said the seen from behind...I'd pass as a woman already...yay :)

Hair is more dry on estrogen because it suppresses oil production while T and (progesterone) stimulate it..

Thanks KayXo...did'nt know that :)
I noticed (cant otherwise, I brush the stuff at least once per day) that is got more dry, yet not more fragile...
I did an (eeky) experiment all the way at the beginning: not wash it for several weeks...result: no smell and soft (more dry) hair...
Now I use ONE shampoo only (come from six different ones) and (perhaps) a conditioner...blowdry it gently (not intense) and let my hair wave out. Okay, not blow-dried like my hairdresser does...but..I cannot afford a visit to the hairdresser once per week, LOL
