Title: Why is Ear Ringing sound played most of the times in an intense part of a movie?

For example I was watching a shortfilm on Youtube and it was about depression. Well this girl self mutilated her wrists and it got all dark and played ear ringing sounds. I just wonder why they put that instead of some song?

I've heard of this before somewhere. They do it in most films in order to make the audience feel uneasy and on edge.
