Title: Am On SSDI, Will This Cause Problems?
Post by: Reyes on September 19, 2016, 01:44:06 AM
Okay so for awhile now I've kinda been fretting on this issue, and figured it was about time to ask someone.

Okay, so back when I was 18, my parent's got me on SSDI because of my Aspergers. I've always been a very quiet person so it was easy to seem worse then I am. I do regret that decision sometimes now.

Anyway! I started getting the checks every month, with my dad as the payee, I think that's the right word.

So as I said, for awhile now I've kinda been nervous like, will the social security administrators or whatever go, 'According to our records you're not mentally competent enough to make this decision, either stop or we end your social security(and possibly send me to jail if what I read earlier is true)'

And well yeah if it came down to it, I'd leave my social security, but if I did that I'd have to wait quite a few more years before I could start, anything.

I don't think you have anything to worry about - after all there are a growing number of cases where minor children (in other words not considered competent to make their own decisions under the law) are transitioning (with their parents' help of course). If you're already eligible to receive benefits that would change only if the condition that triggered the eligibility (Asperger's in your case) itself changes - a gender transition would not affect that. Just remember to promptly notify Social Security when you legally change your name/gender.

If your over 21 you can petition social security to arrange a new guardian to make sure you spend the money right.

Oh, no, it has nothing to do with that. I was just wondering if having it would cause a problem.

I have been on disability since age 20. I am now 50. Transitioning will not effect your income. I hope this puts your mind at ease.
