Title: XD I caused quite a bit of gender confusion...
Post by: Amanda_Combs on October 30, 2016, 10:19:20 PM
It cracked me up pretty hard... also made me feel nice. [emoji846] I was at work and a couple of 20-something guys walked up behind me, and I was turning towards them as they spoke.  One of them says, "excuse me mam...man!  Mam?  Uuuuhhh... We need help over here."  He was trying so hard to be polite and get it right.  I was in guy mode and didn't know them so I don't really care how they gender me, but the effort was very appreciated.  Anybody else got similar encounters??? I'd love to hear about it! [emoji2]

I've had a few of them.  I'm guessing mostly because I've had my hair long enough to wear it in a ponytail for most of the last 16 years.

A couple where I've been ma'am ed from behind at work.  I'm 6'3" and not skinny so nice to think I can be seen as ma'am from behind without trying.  They always apologize but I never cared.

Recently got a "thank you ma'am, I mean sir" from a cashier after I paid.  Had my hair down but was in male mode otherwise.   I think I had some make up in my purchase so maybe that had something to do with it.  I did tell her  that ma'am was just fine though I  didn't see if she had a reaction as I was walking away.

Lol, yeah. I was in a parking lot for what I think may have been a government building. I stopped by a nearby police officer to ask about parking. As soon as I rolled down the window he said, 'What can I do for you, Beautiful?' I thought it was funny, as I was early in my transition and was actually trying to pass as a guy for work. I took the compliment, but he seemed confused as soon as I spoke. It was humorous to me, as I'm totally lesbian and he seemed completely bewildered by the interaction.

Had the same reaction last week at a sandwich shop.  The guy behind the counter asked "what'cha hav'n ma'am.". I looked up and he paused, got flustered, changed the gender and was totally embarrassed.

My response was to smile and say "that's alright" at his obvious embarrassment.  Next time I think I'll say. "thank you". Mostly because I'll be "out" to the people I'm typically out with at lunch.

I've been called Mam several times while i have been in boy mode at the grocery store. Each time, the person could only see my face. I was actually pleased to hear them call me Mam. It made me think that I've been doing something right.

Ha!  I get that sometimes too!  Another really funny one recently... I maybe revealed too much.  This lady wearing super thick glasses asked me a question and mammed me in the asking.  So I answer.  She looks awkward for a moment and then says "thank you, sir, I have very poor eyesight and I think maybe I called you mam...sorry."  And without thinking I tell her it's ok and that I'm fine with either.  It took me a minute to realize how weird that probably sounded to her! I usually tell them,
"that's ok. I'm kinda in-between right now."

I work in public service and was helping this elderly woman handle her affairs. She called me mam the entire interview for 30 minutes until the end. She asked my name and I told her my male name. she was confused for a second. I'm always in guy disguise at work, but every once in a while this kind of stuff will happen. Im happy with what I can get though. Better than the coworker who unknowingly goes out of her way to make statements about me being male...(guess I should tell her at some point)
