Transgender Day of Remembrance held today to remember those killed by transphobic violence

"November 20th marks Transgender Day of Remembrance, and thousands of people are expected to come together across the globe to mourn the lives of those in the transgender community as a result of their gender identity.
A long list of participating venues is available on the TDoR website, as vigils are being held internationally in London, San Francisco, New Orleans and Iceland where names of victims of anti-trans violence will be read out. "

We held our Transgender Day of Remembrance services today in the San Francisco region. In my area, Contra Costa county, there was a nice sermon at the local Unitarian Universalist church, as well as a discussion group later in the day.

This evening the UU church and the CC Rainbow folks, along with a contingent from the Diablo Valley Girls transgender  social support group attended a ceremony in Todos Santos park. This was a lovely ceremony, and the outpouring of support from the community was wonderful.

The cities of Pleasant Hill and Concord officially declared the day as the Transgender Day of Remembrance, the first time they have done this.

I attended all the events, and afterward five of us from the Diablo Valley Girls [-]terrorized[/-] dined out at a local restaurant. (We did make the waiter nervous, I think)

I attended a remembrance service put on by Out Boulder County in Longmont, CO last evening. The city of Longmont declared it an official transgender day of remembrance. There was a good turn out and a lot of emotional response. It was my first service of this nature and I was not prepared for the impact that it had on me. The mix of morning, loss and anger is not something that I am handling easily and there have been many tears throughout the day. Sadly it has added a fear to my just walking around my home town. I almost panicked when I left a coffee house this morning and a group of drunk rowdies started yelling and cursing...not at me, just at life in general but it scared me a lot. I know that complaining is of no value and we all have to live in the world that we do live in.....but it just isn't right......it keeps bringing up all of the stuff that I am working so hard on putting behind me from that old life......and it hurts! - Anne

I always freak when you get groups of guys standing together making noise about something. I freaked when I walked out in the street of the downtown area where  I live and the Cubs had just won and the students were all sreaming people going crazy scares the hell out of me.
