Title: Disclose Trans Status on CCW permit appliction
Post by: MelissaRC on November 21, 2016, 02:48:09 PM
I am about to file an application with my local Sheriff Dept. to obtain a Concealed Carry permit for my small pistol.

I have good reason because (1) I spend a lot of time in remote desert areas late at night (photography) and have been accosted twice, and (2) as a transitioning M2F, I have seen many accounts of violense against transgender women. I would not mind having some means of defense in my purse, although I would not expect ever to use it.

The question is should I disclose #2 about my trans status on my application, or discussion?

I doubt that is relevant.  Whatever you put down just needs to match your official records, name, SSN, etc. so the background check goes through.

I'm with Deborah I don't believe that info is relevant. Reason number 1 is more than enough if they need a reason for why you want the permit. Hugs

CCW laws vary from state to state. Some states and areas of the state make it almost impossible to get one and my state of Arizona allows you to conceal carry without a permit however it is better to have one. Seeing where you are, open carry might be a better solution and much of the time no paper work is required. Conceal carry is really intended for when you are in a populated area and you wish to remove the gun from public vision so the public is more comfortable.

As for the paper work, if it requires other names that you have used, you must provide them for the background check. Other than that, fill out the required information and don't add anything that isn't requested.

It's irrelevant. You'd have to disclose any former names, so if your old name is a very masculine one they will probably figure it out. I wouldn't add anything to it that isn't explicitly asked for. I had no issues getting one in Virginia or a non-resident one from Utah.

I live in Oregon, have one for my home state, New Hampshire, Utah and Florida. I'm also a defensive tactics instructor teaching for the past 15 years.

All permits started as a male, transitioned which required a letter from my surgeon to complete the renewal processes with no issues.

When asked why you want a permit the best thing to say across the board is "I want one for self-protection" which works for most states but there are many states were it's extremely difficult to obtain one.

Keep everything simple with full disclosure is best because if you omit something that is a red flag to them that other things are missing or falsified.

Lastly, this is a decent high level resource
