Hello all...and Happy New Year.
New to this site, rejoined today. Usually I don't have much to say.
Not sure if I need to post a few times before I can add more personal info to my profile.

So I'm 51, living in Ottawa Canada.
I had my surgery with Dr. brassard in September 2014. While the surgery, and the outcome have been great, I had been living full time for seven years. Surgery sort of was the final step.

Not sure if I have pearls of wisdom to share, but always happy to answer any questions.

Hi (again) Nina!
didn't want to hijack the other tread! Born and raised here in Ottawa! Had my surgery in 92 out of country, at the time if you wanted OHIP to cover you, you had to go through the " gatekeepers" at the Clarke (now the CAMH) in Toronto!

Well, you can answer some of my questions about people who have completed everything on their list:

Now that you are done "transitioning,"

1. Do you consider yourself to be transgender?

2. Do you socialize with transgender friends, or attend any transgender-related group activities/support groups?

3. Did you blend into the mainstream and forget about your former life?

4. Do your current friends and work peers know your background?

5. Did you change jobs and/or partners as a result of transitioning?

Just wondering what typically happens, since most people on this forum are dealing with transition issues, or if they return to the transgender forum, it's only to help others.

I still cringe hearing CAMH. Worst process IMHO. First, the trip to TO, then a couple meetings...then the silly video conference I had to do from Ottawa.
Oh well, the good news is OHIP paid 100%, and for that I am grateful.

Surgery in '92? Congrats...while mine was only two years ago, feels like 20 years.

No. Never considered myself trans before surgery. Always thought of myself as Nina - female.

Not anymore. I was frustrated by a local trans group whereby their opinions were very different from mine.
At the time I was seeking others who were transitioning, but none were, or planned to transition.

I think I did a pretty good job. Early on, my biggest problem was my voice. I sought a speech therapist, but after six months, I just didn't enjoy. It felt like I was forcing it too hard, having to think how I should speak. One day, I just decided to hell with it. Since then, my confidence rose exponentially as I no longer care what people think. I have so many friends,new family on my hubby side, a church I belong to.
The thurning point in my transition when I went from 90% anxiety to 1%...was the day I dropped doing voice training. I decided no more pretending or forcing. It was time to be me.

4. Do your current friends and work peers know your background?
I don't work. Retired in 2012, but my hubby works - Ottawa Pokice.
Everyone knows my background, very open about it.

5. Did you change jobs and/or partners as a result of transitioning?
I walked out on my ex wife in 2007...divorced a year later. Best move ever.

Just wondering what typically happens, since most people on this forum are dealing with transition issues, or if they return to the transgender forum, it's only to help others.

absolutely! had to keep focused on the goal , my surgery! I had to put up with a lot from them, much was emotionally stressful to me and might have even been considered inappropriate in comparison to todays standards of care! Im glad that now things have changed for those looking at getting support for their GCS in Ont.!
