Title: FtM - how long before the voice breaks?
Post by: Hazumu on January 30, 2006, 03:35:00 PM
I was trying to explain to my electrologist how I'm stuck with my male-sounding voice -- that it doesn't un-break on a feminizing hormone regimine --  and she asked about FtM.

I told her that those people who transition FtM end up with a male voice and a beard for the rest of their lives, and she wanted to know how long on masculinizing hormones does it take for the voice to break and the beard to grow?  I didn't have the answer to that.

Dennis, How long did it take for your guy voice to fully develop?

Does anybody else have any information?

Thanks;

Haz

I started on a very low dose at first and there were some noticeable voice changes, but nothing major. As soon as I got on half the normal dose, my voice started sounding indisputably male. That was six months after starting T. I think for most guys that start at full dose, it happens within a couple of months. The actual break, that is. The deepening seems to start within weeks.

Beard to grow. I wish. My facial hair is blond. It started growing in the mustache and goatee area after about 10 months on T, but I still couldn't grow anything that wouldn't look totally silly, and I only have to shave about once a week. That varies depending on your genetics.

I know one guy who had a decent patch of hair on his chin after only six weeks. Another had visible sideburns after a few months. I suspect I'll be a few years before I could actually grow something, if ever.

Basically, starting T is like starting puberty, and everyone's pace through it is different.

From a GM standpoint. I started growing facial hair when I was 16. It was pretty patchy. The whole time I was in the Army I only needed to shave every other day, and that was under close scrutiny(Morning inspections). It wasn't until I was 20 that I could grow a really decent beard. Of course these days I wish I had never grown a beard. Oh well.

Hey there Dennis, chin up, my male puberty lasted about ten, eleven years (it was forced, given T a couple years into pubescence), started seeing abeard a real one around 25 yrs; wish I could donate my beard to you directly. This second puberty is a beeyatch.
